HATCHis currently seeking a highly motivatedSenior Rail Vehicle Engineer – Carbody and Trucksto join our North American Infrastructure Practice in our vehicle mechanical engineering group in ourAmbler, PAoffice.

Minimum Qualifications:

A Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering with a minimum of 15 years of rail vehicle design experience; an advanced degree or certification is desirable. The ideal candidate possesses a knowledge of rail vehicle car body structures and truck (bogie) design including truck wheel and suspension elements, structural analysis methods (FEA), vehicle dynamic performance including vehicle track interaction analysis. Addition qualifications required: demonstrated experience with both linear and non-linear Finite Element Analysis (ANSYS, LSDYNA, Abaqus or equivalent), experience with multi-body dynamics simulation tools with a focus on rail vehicle modeling (SIMPack, Vampire, NUCARs), application of rail industry standards, and specification development. Functional knowledge of structural design topics, metal fatigue/fitness for service calculations, crashworthiness, wheel / rail contact mechanics, vibration and testing analysis, validation testing of rail vehicle structures and vehicle running dynamics / track interactions, including truck suspension performance are required.

The candidate must demonstrate a high work ethic; be willing to work independently or under limited instruction from senior staff or clients; be able to interact well with senior client staff and demonstrate strong communication and organizational skills including team management, project management, multitasking, and meeting deadlines. PE registration is desirable but not required. Relevant professional experience will be considered as a substitute for academic degree requirements. Both domestic and foreign travel may be required.

As the successful candidate, you will:
  • Hands-on engineering and design oversight work within project team as subject matter expert for car body structures, truck (bogie) design, and wheel / rail interface management on light rail, subway, commuter trains, intercity passenger rail, and high-speed rail projects (procurements), design / build delivery projects, or specific equipment related studies.
  • Review and/or generate linear and non-linear Finite Element Analyses utilizing FEA software.
  • Review and/or generate vehicle track interaction simulations using multi-body simulation software.
  • Review mechanical/structural/welding related design submittals and prepare detailed, actionable comments of findings; participate in formal design review meetings and technical working sessions.
  • Act as a trusted advisor to our clients, helping to deliver effective and cost-efficient solutions.
  • Manage deliverables, client relations, financial management and reporting, and safety of various projects to ensure quality, client satisfaction, and profitability.
  • Develop technical specifications, overhaul /maintenance requirements for car body and trucks parts.
  • Lead structure / mechanical failure investigations and root cause studies; prepare client reports.
  • Conduct engineering assessments for service-life extension or overhaul programs.
  • Oversee performance validation testing of carbody and truck structural elements, mechanical systems as well as vehicle dynamic performance including wheel /rail interaction.
  • Participate in component quality assurance and manufacturing audits and inspections.
  • Provide direction and monitor the work of junior staff, develop training materials.
  • Assist in pursuits, client relationship building efforts, and building technical excellence within the group.


You bring to the role:
  • A Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or more advance degree.
  • At least 15 years of relevant experience with commuter rail, transit, light rail, freight rail or transit projects with a proven track record in railway engineering and management.
  • Respect in the rail industry and respected connections in the Class 1 railroad and/or State and Local Transit Authority markets.
  • Strong experience with carbody and truck design including vehicle / track interaction.
  • Experience in managing projects.
  • PE registration, or eligible for registration.
  • Experience managing multi-disciplinary teams in a rail or transit project environment.
