ASARCO LLC is a fully integrated miner, smelter, and refinery of copper in the United States with over 2,800 employees spanning across 5 sites in Arizona and Texas.

We are looking for motivated students with a strong interest in the mining industry. Our internship program is 10 weeks long, in which you will receive important industry training and get involved in meaningful real-world projects like planning a program, designing a process, or implementing technology. The culmination of your program will include an opportunity to present your work to management at ASARCO & Grupo Mexico.

Position: Electrical Engineer Intern

Electrical Engineer Intern will be assigned to the ASARCO Mission mining operation, a hard rock open pit copper mine located 18 miles south of Tucson in Sahuarita, Arizona.

Duties will include/assist in:
  • All facets of engineering projects, including new production equipment, continuous improvement initiatives, and process and maintenance support of plant electrical equipment.
  • Electrical controls, data acquisition and automation strategies and hands-on technical skills as well as contractor/contract management skills.
  • Provide electrical engineering support to maintenance and facility.
  • Functions related to plant facilities and maintenance support. This includes specifying electrical equipment, supervising procurement, installation and giving support to maintenance functions.
  • Areas of concern are electrical distribution and substations, medium voltage motor starters, and switchgear selection. Along with PLC and VFD training regarding application interface and troubleshooting skills.
  • Interact with vendors and contractors on projects and material selection.
  • Report to management on facility energy management including energy audits/conservation, TEP interface, substation maintenance along with contract and quality of service provisions.

Position Requirements:
  • Requires excellent communication skills, both verbal and written
  • Requires excellent organizational and interpersonal abilities
  • Our offer will require at least a ten-week internship commitment between mid-May and mid-August.
  • Must be attending college on a full-time basis
  • Must be Sophomore, Junior, Senior, or Graduate level
  • Must be majoring in Electrical Engineering or a closely related discipline
