The Director - Data, Analytics, and Automation has the overall responsibility to serve as the strategic partner and interface to Vulcan Materials Company (VMC) IT and business functions across the enterprise for the purpose of defining a long-term data, analytics, and automation strategy, roadmap, and delivery of foundational technical capabilities and business enablement projects. The Director - Data, Analytics, and Automation collaborates with IT business partners and leadership to prioritize data, analytics, and automation needs to be aligned with the overall VMC company strategy. Plays a key role in educating key stakeholders and IT business partners about what's possible using data capabilities. Proactively shares knowledge of technology risks and opportunities, drive innovation and supports enablement of key capabilities to build competitive advantage and improve efficiency using data, analytics, and automation. The Director - Data, Analytics, and Automation proactively serves as a "trusted advisor" relative to the use of data and automation. By partnering with IT business partners across the enterprise, this individual will facilitate the planning and execution of business initiatives through the use of technology relative to data, analytics, and automation. The incumbent will be responsible for VMC's data governance and full lifecycle data management. This leadership role will be evolving the current data and analytics technology platform that will become a strategic advantage for VMC and will be responsible for the design, architecture, optimization, quality, and metadata.

What You'll Do:
  • Demonstrate and make extensive use of strong leadership qualities, and quickly establish credibility within the organization. Lead cross-functional groups in a unified direction and resolve conflicts in setting priorities relative to data and automation initiatives
  • Oversee data governance, data retention, and data compliance programs in coordination with our Legal, Information Security, and IT departments
  • Responsible for the ongoing development and cross-functional alignment of the enterprise-wide data strategy and associated roadmaps. Clearly communicate and gain alignment on that strategy from key stakeholders at various levels of the organization. Establish, measure progress, and regularly report progress against key success metrics.
  • Establish and evolve the enterprise data architecture, considering existing architecture and leaning into opportunities with leading-edge technologies such as cloud, AI/ML, integrations, data lake, and visualization. Continuously update reference data architecture based on changing needs, and key developments in technology.
  • Leverage strong industry network to develop external partnerships.
  • Develop and prioritize a backlog of demand across the enterprise
  • Create a positive environment for experimentation and foster a culture where data drive decisions. Lead initiatives to support the business through enablement and data democratization while maintaining guardrails on data access
  • Oversee the development, execution, and adoption of data, analytics, and automation tools supporting all functions across and divisions of VMC
  • Define data strategy and road map to power reporting, analytics and automation uses cases
  • Ensure that VMC business analytics capabilities enable quick insight generation, which inform company decisions and provides a sustainable competitive advantage
  • Develop / direct development of AI and machine learning capabilities
  • Evaluate new technology solutions for improving the collection and use of data
  • Develop a strategy for the utilization of data from multiple data sources to improve insights and analytical conclusions
  • Improve the data quality to support the delivery of insights across all analytics platforms, make sure that data quality metrics are aligned with best practices
  • Define metadata management strategy and implementation that aligns to enterprise data strategy and data governance policy, collaborate with business stakeholders and IT business partners to define data definitions and classifications
  • Develop ways in which we can use our data assets to improve customer experience and drive competitive advantage
  • Support definition and execution of new business models/services based on data
  • Create a shared vision and their respective solutions and facilitate decision-making and arbitration relating to trade-offs both within and between different solution platforms
  • Provide leadership, coaching, mentoring, and management to direct the team.
  • Develop and implement a sound rationale for portfolio management and managing product phase-in-phase-out plans, proactively anticipates gaps and overlaps within the portfolio.
  • Create consensus with other functions and IT departments as to the timing of solution introductions and withdrawals
  • Oversee the launch of solutions and helps to maximize the positive impact on the organization
  • Identify, screen, and evaluate new solution opportunities to address unmet (internal and external) needs.
  • Collaborate with architecture and operations teams to ensure solution compatibility with company standards
  • Collaborate with the Project Management Office on the intake process and prioritization of candidate projects across the company
  • Participate in strategic and budgetary planning processes, prepare and administer operating budgets
  • Other duties as assigned
Skills You'll Need :

Education. Bachelor's degree (B.A. or B.S.) from a four-year college or university with degree in Mathematics, Statistics, Engineering, or Computer Science or 10 to 15 years of IT and business/industry work experience

Experience.
  • 10 years in the data, analytics and automation space
  • 7 years developing and executing strategic plans
  • Minimum of 5 years of leadership experience
  • Strong business acumen. Understands the business implications of actions and decisions.
  • Understanding of current-state data privacy requirements
  • Deep digital, data, and analytics expertise
  • Familiarity with common analytics and data technologies such as enterprise data warehouses, data lakes, modern AI/ML techniques, and the major cloud vendors
  • Strong organization and project management skills, as well as strategic thinking and planning skills, with the ability to plan and manage multiple projects at a time

  • Local and regional travel by automobile and the periodic need to travel by air.
  • This position requires knowledge and awareness of mining and construction site hazards.
  • May be required occasionally to use protective gear and to take other precautions when in or near a mining/construction site.

  • Ability to work in a stressful, deadline-oriented environment that requires complex, technical information and decision making
