Dynamic Earth Solutions (DES) specializes in site planning, spatial information and digital terrain modeling, surface and subsurface investigations, rock mechanics, underground structures, geotechnical laboratory services, flood forecasting and water resource management through our geotechnical, hydrotechnical, and civil site development expertise.
Senior Geotechnical Consultant
In pursuit of our vision for growth, our DES team in The Canadian Prairies is actively seeking qualified and highly motivated professionals to join, develop, and represent our vibrant and successful team comprised of highly skilled individuals. Although the position will be based within The Canadian Prairies, there will be opportunity for engagement on interesting, technically challenging, and high-profile projects not only within our home region, but also across Canada, and abroad.
The typical work undertaken in support of our geotechnical and engineering geology works is provided below. The successful candidate is not expected to be an expert in all areas that have been listed, but must have experience in several of the following areas:
• Design, construction, and repair of earthworks.
• Pavement and track bed design.
• Slope stability analysis and stabilisation techniques for both soil and rock slopes, including evaluation of landslides and mitigation.
• Design, construction, and reuse of deep and shallow foundations for both onshore and offshore applications.
• Application of grouting techniques to design and construction of geotechnical works.
• Experience and familiarity with geotechnical principles related to deep and surface mining.
• Mitigation of underground mining: prediction of impact on surface infrastructure, mitigation of effects, stabilisation of underground mine works.
• Tunneling design and analysis, including evaluation of effects on adjacent structures.
• Vibration analysis and mitigation.
• Site investigation.
• Understanding of geotechnical processes and geohazard evaluation.
• Experience in in design, construction, and inspection of Dams/ dykes (irrigation, hydro, tailings)
• Design and construction of retaining structures/ solutions (mechanically stabilized earth walls, retained soil slopes, sprayed concrete with mesh, soil nails, tension piles, etc.)
• Specification and installation of geotechnical instrumentation, and analysis of instrumentation data.
• Understanding and experience in the application of geophysics related to non-destructive test methods, as applicable to the discipline.
• Experience in the specification and use of geosynthetics for various applications, including mechanically stabilized earth walls, retained soil slopes, liner systems and ground improvement.
• Knowledgeable in the design and application of in-situ ground improvement methods (soil mixing, stone columns, rigid inclusions, rammed aggregate piers, vibrocompaction, etc).
• Experience in conducting soil-structure and pipe-soil interaction analysis and assessments.
• Understanding and application forensic engineering principles.
• Numerical modelling experience using the Finite Element and Finite Difference methods. Ability to undertake numerical modelling in reference to alternative methods is considered an advantage.
As the successful candidate, you will be able to and have completed the following:
• Either act as or work to become a Subject Matter Expert on one or more technical subjects, from concept through design, construction, and demolition/closure of a project lifecycle.
• Support, guide, and lead geotechnical and geomechanics studies with the delivery of project requirements as they relate to scope.
• Identify project works that can add to the geotechnical field and where possible write and present technical papers.
• Identify upcoming projects and business opportunities that are in alignment with the team's strategic position.
• Lead and participate in discussions related to scoping requirements for proposals and provide input to engineering, operating and capital cost estimates.
• Prepare and/or review project procedures, standard specifications, design criteria, engineering calculations and technical specifications.
• Provide mentorship and identify opportunities for development of junior, intermediate, and senior engineers, designers, and technicians.
• Understand the technical capabilities of individual team members and facilitate the sharing of relevant technical expertise across projects and across Hatch globally.
• Perform geotechnical design works at both the conceptual and detailed design stages and in consideration to interdisciplinary constraints/ considerations.
• Provide office and field based geological and/or geotechnical services for projects, including support of site engineering teams to provide technical solutions and timely response to technical queries.
• Provide specialist geological and/or geotechnical advice and analytical services.
• Develop and maintain positive relationships with internal clients within other business sectors, and external clientele.
You must bring to the role:
• Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering or Geological Engineering from an accredited university.
• Registered as a Professional Engineer, Professional Geoscientist, or eligible for the professional license.
• 15+ years' experience in relevant geotechnical design.
• Experience working on projects in a multi-disciplinary environment
• Proficiency in the use of geological/geotechnical software suites (such as: Geostudio, Rocscience, Bentley, Leapfrog, etc.)
• Sound understanding of geotechnical design codes and technical standards
• A high standard of communication and interpersonal skills
• Effective planning and organizational skills
• Ability to function with minimal supervision
• Excellent safety awareness.
