Strategic Mine Planning Engineer

About the role

We are looking for a Strategic Mine Planning Engineer based in Boron, CA USA. The key focus for the strategic planning engineer is to maximize the net present value (NPV) of the remaining mine life through the optimization of operational costs and planned capital expenditures.

This role is a great opportunity for an experienced Professional to work within the long-range mine planning team at our Boron Operation with a focus on performance optimization and to ensure that the goals of the business unit are met through efficient and effective deployment of technical support from the Mine Technical Services department. Reporting to the Senior Engineer - Strategic Planning, your responsibilities will include:
  • Interface and advise short range planning team to ensure compliance with the longer-range mine plan, as well as to verify key inputs / assumptions into the long-range plan remain valid.
  • Develop an understanding of marketing and plant operations that drive the assumptions of the long-range mine plan.
  • Data analysis on the key cost contributors that will promote business improvement initiatives.
  • Building and maintaining the 1-year and 5 year mine operating costs budgets.
  • Development of the annual, five year, and life of mine plan; including mine design, mining sequence, waste dump planning, and required capital expenditure.
  • Seeking out best practices for modelling and planning the mining sequence over the remaining life of mine.
  • Business Improvement projects.

What you need to bring:

To be successfully considered for this role, you will have:
  • BS degree in Mining Engineering or equivalent.
  • Additional qualifications in Finance is desired but not required.
  • Exceptional communication skills, including public speaking.
  • 4-8 years in a mine planning role preferably long term planning in an active mine setting.
  • Knowledge of Modular Mining, XERAS financial modelling, Vulcan mine planning, COMET optimization software systems, Whittle Pit Optimization tool, and Runge OPMS scheduling tool.
  • 3D design knowledge using Vulcan or Mine sight, scheduling, budgeting, and financial modelling experience.
  • Language: English
  • Microsoft Office knowledge
  • Strong problem solving, strategic and analytical capability
  • Effective time management and personal organizational skills
  • Demonstrate an open minded genuine curiosity towards understanding the needs of business and the impact of applied solutions
  • Ability to work independently

Where you will be working

Rio Tinto Borates Boron Operation in Boron, CA mines approximately three million tonnes of borate ore every year from the Boron mine. More than 80 different minerals are found at this geologically unique site, including the four boron-based minerals in greatest demand by industry: tincal, kernite, ulexite and colemanite. It produces nearly half of the world's supply of refined borate products
