Role Summary:

Provide strategic and long term mine planning support to Barrick's North America (NA) operating mine sites, development projects and growth opportunities. Position will be based in North America, flexible on the exact location, and will require frequent travel (25 to 50%).

Key Qualifications, Duties and Responsibilities:

The key duties and responsibilities of the Regional Mine Planning Lead are as follows:
  • Oversight on LOM plans for NA region
  • Provide support to site mine planning teams to deliver high quality life-of-mine plans, forecasts, and budgets ensuring the conversion of the orebody into profit
  • Provide mining engineering support for regional project studies (scoping to Feasibility), merger and acquisition evaluations and due diligence teams as required
  • Highlight opportunities and risks in the mine plan
  • Undertake strategic pit and mine schedule optimization studies as required
  • Develop practical long term mine designs and production schedules as required
  • Develop operating and capital cost estimates to support financial modelling of mine plans
  • Work with site and regional finance teams to complete economic evaluations of projects and alternative scenario plans
  • Mentoring and guidance of site based mine planning teams
  • Identification, engagement, and management of consultants where required for mine engineering studies
  • Review, improve, and standardize long-term mine planning processes, workflows, and systems
  • Review, improve, and standardize reporting and presentation of mine planning information to relevant stakeholders
  • Regional QP/CP for sign-off of mine plans for reserve disclosure
  • Responsible for corporate governance and SOX compliance
Skills and Qualifications:
  • Bachelor degree in Mine Engineering, required
  • Minimum 10 years' experience in Mining Engineering roles in metalliferous mines, with a strong background in open pit and underground mine planning, with continued advancement upwards into management, required
  • Should be qualified as a registered QP/CP (Qualified Persons for Ni 43-101 or Competent Persons for Joint Ore Reserves Committee (JORC) or demonstrate the requisite criteria to secure this designation within 12 months of joining the company, preferred
  • Candidate must be able to demonstrate end to end understanding and experience in all areas of Mine Planning that occur from the project phase through to the completion of ore processing, required
  • Candidates must have particular proven experience in the following areas:
    • Long Term and Short Term mine planning
      • Mine Designs
      • Mine Schedule Optimization
    • Project Scoping, Design, Scheduling and Execution
    • First principles of mining operating and capital cost estimation
    • Cut-off grade calculation
    • Software Skills: Deswik, Maptek Vulcan, Whittle, Minemax or similar, MS Office Suite, required
  • Candidate must be able to demonstrate strong personal and leadership skills, with a proven track record of managing / mentoring a team of engineers based on sites, required
  • Role will require in addition to technical expertise, strong management skills including but not limited to talent development, mentoring, skills transfer as well as developing strong partnering skills, required
  • Strong presentation and communication skills are a must; responsible for clear and productive messaging of mine planning related information through to all levels of the organization, required
  • Candidates will be required to communicate in English, required
  • Travel will be required at times to all sites and jurisdictions within Barrick operations of the North America region
