Our people division is growing, and we are looking for a Senior Capital Projects Engineer.

  • Oversee all aspects of mining projects. Manage contractors, construction workers, supporting engineers, and project staff for assigned greenfield and brownfield projects.
  • Conduct project design, costing, and implementation management including managing consultants performing associated detailed engineering, design, and costing for the project.
  • Interface with other departments including, but not limited to, Health, Safety and Environment (HSE), Asset Management, Reliability, Operations, Technical Services, and other departments impacted by the project. Obtain customer input and support of designs and deliverables and keeps customer apprized throughout the project to ensure alignment and agreement upon deliverables.
  • Interface with environmental department and/or permitting group to ensure permitting is secured, as needed, to prevent delays in construction, commissioning, and final handover to the plant.
  • Write and generate project scopes of work, subsequent contracts, procurement orders, required supporting documentation, and perform other duties as assigned.
  • Apply DROM (Design for Reliability, Operability, and Maintainability), OR (Operational Readiness) principles, and Business Improvement practices to provide the safest, lowest long-term cost of asset ownership to the value chain.
Responsibilities:
  • Require engineering specifications and criteria comply with applicable government (MSHA, EPA, etc.) and corporate codes, practices, policies, standards, and specifications.
  • Proactively analyze problems as they occur and develop countermeasures to remediate the problem while remaining cognizant to not introduce other problems because of the implemented countermeasures.
  • Apply the seven project phases concept (Identify, Prepare, Appraise, Present, Implement, Monitor, and Evaluate) for all projects.
  • Effectively communicate with peers and stakeholders at all levels within the organization as required.
  • Understand the fundamentals of other peripheral engineering roles and be cognizant of overlaps and impacts to one another during every project phase.
  • Understand and implement DROM (Design for Reliability, Operability, and Maintainability), OR (Operational Readiness), and Business Improvement principles to help achieve the safest and lowest long-term cost of asset ownership to the value chain.
  • Prepare capital appropriates requests including all required supporting documentation, and champion the project to seek approval and funding.
  • Prepare, schedule, coordinate, and monitor assigned engineering projects and manage projects within the constraints of time, cost, and scope, and report any significant (+/- 15%) deviations including proposed countermeasures.
  • Develop proposals and cost estimates for assigned projects including required equipment, materials, personnel, and other peripheral services.
  • Address and develop resolutions to problems associated with a projects' design, engineering, and/or construction recognizing problems will vary in severity and may require advanced project management knowledge to ensure adequate resolution.
  • Perform quality control tasks against budgets, schedules, plans, and personnel performance, and produce and distribute project status reports at the predetermined frequency to relevant parties as required.
  • Perform risk and consequences analysis for projects to understand both risks as well as opportunities that may occur during each project phase and act upon them accordingly.
  • Formulate project parameters and assign responsibilities to the most capable employees and monitor progress while addressing constraints as well as issues in a timely manner.
  • Interact with functions and/or customers who may be impacted by the project to determine and account for their needs and requirements, while representing those customers interests in the field during project execution.
  • Mentor direct reports in the skills required to collaborate with other Project Engineers to choose and adopt the most cost effective and efficient practices during the project and to ensure procurement specifications for equipment are adequate while adhering to DROM and OR principles, NGM equipment standardization initiatives, and best business practices.
  • Cooperate and communicate with the project manager and other entities as needed and collaborate with other project engineers to choose and adopt the most cost effective and efficient practices during the project.
  • Develop procurement specifications for equipment while adhering to DROM and OR principles, NGM equipment standardization initiatives, and best business practices.
  • Coordinate with necessary entities to create and/or update standard operating procedures (SOPs) and asset management tactics including bills of material, spares, preventive maintenance, predictive maintenance, etc., prior to handover to the plant. Aid operating personnel by providing required training and guidance to operating personnel for unfamiliar equipment during commissioning, start-up, and ahead of handover to the plant.
  • Create a framework for measuring a project's metrics and effectiveness upon project completion by establishing field testing and monitoring methods required to gauge whether, or not, the project met established criteria defined in the capital appropriations justification. Report results and include any actions required to remediate known shortfalls and distribute report to the appropriate entities as required.
  • Complete post-project report-outs to the appropriate parties at the agreed upon time interval after project completion detailing a project overview, the status of any remaining project deliverables, and any lessons learned to apply to future projects.
Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in engineering or a related field.
  • 5 or more years of project planning and project management experience.
  • Commitment to safety for self and others as well as embracing environmentally friendly work practices.
  • Knowledge of general mining operations and practices.
  • Knowledge of project prioritization, project execution, project management, including knowledge of construction, commissioning, handover, and post-project activities.
  • Experience with contract management and managing contractors.
  • Demonstrated computer literacy, knowledge of design and visualization software, scheduling software, and MS Office products including Word, Excel, Project, and PowerPoint.
  • Ability to interface with multiple functions and roles and at all levels within the organization.
  • Demonstrated project management and organizational skills including time management, leadership, and decision-making abilities.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills at all levels within the organization.
  • Knowledge of applicable engineering and peripheral codes, policies, standards, and best practices.
