The opportunity

We are currently seeking a Mine Planning Engineer to join our highly skilled team to work on a Fly-in/Fly-out basis of 2 weeks On/Off with a standard 12 hours/day schedule, to and from the Menihek region in Labrador, near the town of Schefferville, QC. Operations at our mine site are running 24/7 all year long.

The main pick-up points are St. John's, Gander, Deer Lake, Wabush in NL, Halifax, NS, Moncton, NB, and Montreal, QC.

Reporting to the Assistant-Manager - Mining Operations, the Mine Planning Engineer will be performing mine engineering primarily in the area of short and mid-range planning, as well as some blast design, pit design, and long-range planning work. The position incumbent will coordinate with drill and blast contractors, operations personnel, surveyors, and other engineers in order to ensure the safe and efficient production from the various pits in operation.

This role is expected to work in both an office environment at site as well as field work in collaboration with multiple departments to achieve goals.

Major Responsibilities
  • Develop short medium and long-term mine plans considering applicable OH&S regulations
  • Produce daily and weekly mine plans and communicate to Mine Operations
  • Conduct daily pit tours to ensure compliance to plan
  • Maintain up to date pit and waste dump designs
  • Maintain up to date long range plans
  • Track and measure conformance to plan
  • Track and measure excavation conformance to design
  • Manage and oversee various construction projects on site related to mining
  • Monitor costs and ensure projects are being executed on time and within budget
  • Demonstrate and instil a visible Health & Safety culture.
  • Design drill and blast plans as per standard operating parameters
  • Report potential improvements in drill and blast designs
  • Liaise with drill and blast engineer and contractors to ensure that blast designs are conducive to slope stability requirements
  • Demonstrate initiative and practical problem-solving skills.
  • Provide support to operations in the form of detailed design criteria.
  • Play a major role in the development of planning and reporting systems.
  • Undertake regular audits and inspections as required.


To fulfill these responsibilities, you will be expected to manage and handle the following working conditions; A fast-paced environment, physically demanding, extreme weather conditions and strong attention to detail.

Your Profile
  • Bachelor's Degree in Mine Engineering.
  • 5+ years of experience in mine planning and ideally 3 years of experience in open pit mining
  • Advanced level of expertise in mine planning software ideally MineSight, experience will be an asset.
  • Strong commitment to health, safety, environmental responsibility and sustainable development.
  • Ability to work with little or no supervision
  • You will need to demonstrate strong communication and management skills.
  • Previous experience managing mining contractors will be an asset.
  • Ability to communicate in both English and French will be an asset.
  • Previous experience in drill and blast design will be an asset.
