Organisation

Carbon Tracker Initiative is an independent financial think tank that carries out in-depth analysis on the impact of the energy transition on capital markets and the potential investment in high-cost, carbon-intensive fossil fuels. We believe that financial markets, regulators, investors and policymakers all have an urgent role to play in guiding the world to a climate-secure energy system. Carbon Tracker's analysis of unburnable carbon, stranded assets, and wasted capital has reframed the debate around climate change risk. We provide data and analysis to a range of institutional investors and investor organisations such as the CA100+.

This is an exciting time for Carbon Tracker as a rapidly growing organisation looking to deepen and broaden our reach. We are looking for a Analyst to contribute to research within our Oil, Gas and Mining team. The successful applicant will be expected to deliver public materials from the very beginning, increasingly influencing the research agenda and establishing themselves as a thought leader on transition risk topics.

Role and responsibilities
  • Lead individual oil, gas and mining research projects. Execute sound judgement and critical thinking.
  • Drive research by collecting, organising and analysing purchased and proprietary datasets as well as a broad range of public disclosures.
  • Write high quality public reports, notes and commentary (see Carbon Tracker website for examples)
  • Confidently communicate complex analysis to financial and general audience, including preparation of presentation materials, and working with investor outreach and media teams.
  • Support external stakeholders with ad hoc analysis as required
  • Work independently and alongside others to achieve team and organisational objectives
  • Suggest new ideas for cutting edge research projects

  • Professional experience (4 years+) in any of the following areas: investment and financial analysis, economics, climate change and scenario modelling, and/or the energy or extractives sectors
  • Excellent academic record, educated to degree level, preferably in a numerate discipline (e.g. physical sciences, engineering, maths, economics or finance)
  • Energy industry experience strongly preferred with Midstream/Downstream (refining/petchems) or mining (thermal coal) experience desirable.
  • Experience within an asset owner or investment manager in the areas of stewardship or governance, or equity analysis, a significant plus.
  • Competent in MS Office Suite, advanced proficiency in Excel; skills in other relevant analytics/data science packages (e.g. Power BI / Python) also of interest
  • Experience in working in a deadline driven environment

Required attributes
  • A critical eye and a willingness to challenge assumptions, confident forming a logical argument
  • Methodical and organised with a high attention to detail; drives quality in our modelling and analysis
