Our Team

The Health, Safety and Risk team is responsible for leading Vale's safety strategy and supporting departmental safety objectives.

The Opportunity

We are currently seeking a Labourer & Safety Support Summer Students to join our Safety, Health & Risk team at our Vale Thompson, Manitoba Operations. This is a fixed summer work term (approx. 4 months).

As the Safety, Health & Risk student, you will have the opportunity to further your development by providing day-to-day support for various projects and Safety, Health & Risk improvement initiatives with the HSR Team. This is a great opportunity to gain experience in an industrial mining environment by supporting initiatives that include but are not limited to: risk management and hazard identification, analytics, project management along with various administrative duties.

Additionally In this position, you will:
  • Learn the fundamentals of safety and develop hands-on experience with risk management and workplace hazard mitigation.
  • Build your professional network and learn an array of administrative and industrial safety related skills.
  • Support the HSR team to collect, analyze and prepare data for various Health & Safety improvement initiatives to provide insights into trends and patterns for strategic decision-making.
  • Participate in project work pertaining to risk management and safety system implementation.
  • Collaborate with internal stakeholders with diverse backgrounds from our various departments and functions to optimize synergies for standardization.
  • Assist with HSR policy creation and revisions as well as program development and implementation.
  • Participate in HSR team meetings, training, and safety activities.
  • Conduct field visits to our surface and underground operations to conduct audits and take part in interactive conversations alongside with HSR Safety Professionals.
  • Exercise good judgement and maintain confidentiality in handling critical and sensitive information, records and reports.
  • Support other day-to-day activities as assigned.


About You:

Education:
  • Currently enrolled or enrolling in Post-Secondary Education; there is no specific professional limitations though Safety and Health Professional programs is considered an asset.


Experience:
  • Experience in an industrial environment would be considered an asset.


Skills:
  • Effective written and verbal communication with strong interpersonal skills and relationship building capacity.
  • Intermediate knowledge of Microsoft Office applications, specifically Excel, Word & PowerPoint is an asset.
  • Proven time management and organizational skills
  • Ability to manage time effectively and meet deadlines.
  • Adaptable to consistently changing priorities in a fast paced, deadline driven environment.
  • Self-directed and comfortable working both independently with minimal supervision and as part of a team
  • Safety conscious and driven to contribute to improving workplace safety and health initiatives with a solution focused mindset.
  • Eager to learn new skills.
