Duties

As the Associate Director for Mining, the incumbent will:
  • Provide advice and assistance on mining program, scientific policies, activities, and operations.
  • Be responsible for planning, developing, evaluating, and managing mining-related occupational safety and health public health research programs.
  • Provide leadership for the Institute in establishing mining programmatic goals to ensure the Institute's mining mission is met/exceeded within approved appropriations/budget.
  • Liaise and partner with top officials of other Federal, State, and local government organizations, and/or public and private stakeholders, advancing the organization's mining research goals and programs.
  • Develop goals and objectives that integrate the organization's mining mission and programs with occupational and public health objectives necessary to successfully achieve mission and implement quality improvements as needed.
  • Establish, revise, or review policies, procedures, mission objectives, and organizational design, as necessary, to promote team building, implement quality improvements, or in response to concerns with regulatory compliance and/or customer requirements.
  • Represent the Director on various committees and scientific matters with full authority to speak and act on behalf of the organization regarding the mining program.

Qualifications

Current federal employees must be at or equivalent to the GS-14 grade level or above to be considered for this position.

Basic Qualifications for RF-0601: Applicants must possess a degree with a major study in an academic field related to the medical field, health sciences or allied sciences appropriate to the work of the position. This degree must be from an educational program from an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education (external link) at the time the degree was obtained. In addition to the basic qualifications requirement, a Ph.D. in an academic field related to the medical field, health sciences or allied sciences appropriate to the work of the position is required.

Candidates must show clear evidence of specialized experience.

Specialized experience is that which is directly related to the position and which has equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSAs) to successfully perform the duties of the position, such as applying ethical principles and standards in the administration, research and promotion of mining, occupational and public health science, and innovation; and experience working with a broad range of stakeholders, policy, and decision makers.

Typically, experience of this nature is gained at or above the GS-14 grade level in the Federal service or its equivalent with state or local government, the private sector, or nongovernmental organizations

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
