Role Purpose

The core purpose of this role is to provide site-based geotechnical support to the Block Cave Project in the areas of ground control, rock mass classification/characterization, data collection, QA/QC, site investigation programs, and geotechnical process development.

We are seeking an individual for a Fly In, Fly Out opportunity working on a two weeks in, two weeks out rotation.

Accountabilities:

Technical
  • Assist in establishing the site geotechnical processes to support underground mining.
  • Apply sound geotechnical engineering design principles to the overall mining plan (design and schedule) to comply with the Newcrest standards and all applicable regulatory requirements.
  • Apply geotechnical and rock mechanics principles to support the mine design, including:
    • Preparation and oversight of geotechnical site investigation programs
    • Collection of geotechnical information from face mapping and core logging for rock mass characterization, classification, and ground control design
    • Stability assessments and localized support recommendations of underground excavations
    • Installation, maintenance, and data collection of geotechnical instrumentation
  • Create detailed Issued for Construction (IFC) ground support designs based on the preliminary design and guidance from the study team.
  • Investigate and recommend use of geotechnical data-collection technologies working closely with the corporate mining and geotechnical team.
  • Assist in establishing and maintaining an underground geotechnical QA/QC program.
  • Assist in managing contractors to the contract terms with a focus on ground support installation standards.
  • Assist in the geotechnical aspects of scope development, tendering, and award recommendation of various work packages to support the Block Cave Project.
  • Support geotechnical aspects of other key infrastructure, including but not limited to:
    • The Conveyor Decline Box Cut and Portal;
    • Raisebore program;
    • Surface water management infrastructure;
  • Provide safety leadership to the project with a strong focus on process safety and culture.
  • Challenge assumptions and foster innovative thinking, to deliver the best outcomes for Newcrest and partners.

Qualifications & Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree in geological or mining engineering; equivalent degree in a relevant field.
  • Professional Engineer designation in BC or the ability to immediately achieve this.
  • Minimum 5 years of experience as a Geotechnical, or Geological Engineer or related, in operating underground mines and/or projects under development/expansion.
  • Strong background in practical on-site underground geotechnical support including oversight of site investigation programs, rock mass characterization/classification, ground control design, QA/QC, and process development
  • Experience with Deswik mine planning software.
  • Experience with industry standard geotechnical design and analysis software preferred.
  • Ability to communicate effectively (verbal and written) upwards (to Mine Superintendent/Manager Mining) and to operational and technical levels.
  • Experience with Northern Canadian mining projects/operations.
  • Experience in designing ground support systems in rockburst prone ground conditions.
  • Experience in designing ground support systems for large, infrastructure excavations would be favourable.
  • Previous experience with Jumbo Bolting and MD Bolts an asset.
  • Previous working experience with block caving method a plus.
  • SAP or Aconex experience an asset.
