Description of Role

As a Manager primarily responsible for mining tax assurance services within the Tax Accounting and Risk Advisory (TARAS) business, you will combine your tax technical and tax accounting skills with practical commercial, legislative and industry knowledge to provide assurance to our audit clients and to build valued relationships with them and your internal peers.

Key Responsibilities:

Client responsibilities
  • Complete income tax audit procedures and documentation for higher-risk areas to broaden technical skills (e.g., normal and deferred taxes; uncertain tax positions and tax disclosure)
  • Preparing and reviewing mining royalty
  • Supervise the execution of complex parts of the tax audit engagements, building technical competence within the TARAS team
  • Review of the tax technical treatment for significant transactions, e.g. business combination etc.
  • Preparation of tax reports with risks/SADs to be submitted to audit
  • Preparation/Review and submission of income tax returns
  • Preparation of responses to SARS
  • Build strong client relationships and networks, act as the primary day-today contact for the client's tax function
  • Understand our tax service offerings
  • Build strong internal relationships within Assurance and across other tax services offerings (such as International Tax, Transfer Pricing and Indirect specialist teams)
  • Take ownership for the delivery of high quality tax audit work and assist in the preparation for external (IRBA / PCAOB) or internal Tax Quality Review (TQR) or
  • Keep up to date with tax legislation, tax case law and any items published by the South African Revenue Services (Rulings, Interpretation Notes etc).
  • Understand our permissible current tax service offerings and actively assist in identifying opportunities to better serve clients or developing new tax service offerings
  • Regularly contribute towards tax technical opinions and publications
  • Regularly participate in internal tax technical training sessions
  • Manage all financial aspects of client engagements (budget, estimate to complete, pre-approvals)
  • Understand the firm's revenue and growth goals.
  • Contribute to the firm's sales and market initiatives (i.e. Ability to identify out of scope work opportunities at clients).
  • Ensure compliance with the firm's Quality & Risk Management (Q&RM) procedures


People responsibilities
  • Effectively delegate work to members of the tax team, develop people through effectively supervising, coaching and mentoring trainees
  • Develop self and others through both seeking and offering on-the-job coaching and knowledge sharing
  • Understand, follow and communicate workplace policies and procedures to trainees
  • Develop personal profile and awareness of EY offerings internally and within the marketplace
  • Build relationships with key client sponsors
  • Manage staff performance and regularly conduct honest staff appraisals.
  • Ensure that the work environment contributes to improving staff morale and increasing staff productivity.
  • A strong team player who is comfortable working collaboratively and directionally as required and is able to interact with senior management and support teams and leaders


Qualifications & Experience
  • CA(SA)/Bcom(Acc) or similar qualification with an appropriate post degree qualification in tax
  • Accreditation with relevant professional body, SAICA, SAIT, etc.
  • Minimum of 2 - 3 years of experience in mining tax.
  • Detailed understanding of risk-based auditing, knowledge of audit process and auditing techniques (income tax)
  • Knowledge of IFRS
  • Understanding of Quality & Risk Management procedures
  • Compliance with professional development and regulatory requirements


Skills and Behavioural Attributes
  • Strong knowledge of Income Tax and Mining Royalty Acts
  • Knowledge of SARS E-filing, Greatsoft and OneSource
  • Client focused, an ability to actively maintain and develop strong relationships with clients. Strong audit methodology and tax accounting background
  • Tax consulting experience and advisory experience (advantageous)
