Summary:

Barr is seeking a senior brownfields specialist to join its Grand Rapids or Ann Arbor office and undertake challenging and progressive work in the brownfields market, while helping to grow our practice both internally and externally. Barr is an industry leader, and we work with key public and private clients that deeply value our brownfield expertise. This position is available part-time (20 or more hours/week).

Assignments may include working as an individual or as part of a project team to assist with performing or coordinating the completion of ASTM Phase I environmental site assessments in support of property transactions (e.g., acquisitions, divestitures); designing, implementing, and coordinating activities associated with Phase II investigations, including investigating contaminated soil, sediment, groundwater, and vapor intrusion; developing site management strategies and response action plans (RAPs), including conducting remediation technology evaluations and feasibility studies and estimating costs associated with these types of activities; responding to quotes and proposals; and engaging with local professional organizations in the market.

Other responsibilities may include periodic oversight of on-site investigations of contaminated soil, sediment, groundwater, surface water, and vapor; aquifer test performance and analysis; and construction observation.

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in geology, environmental science, or related engineering degree
  • 10 or more years of relevant work experience directly related to the responsibilities above
  • Strong interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills and the ability to communicate effectively with project team members, regulators, and clients
  • Strong technical and problem-solving skills
  • Attention to detail, accuracy, and completeness
  • Strong computer skills, including word processing and use of spreadsheets
  • A flexible working style and the ability to work independently and with teams of specialists to meet client and project needs
  • Willingness to travel and periodically adjust personal schedules to meet project needs
  • Legal authorization to work in the United States without the need for sponsorship
  • Acceptable driving record


Preferred Qualifications:
  • 40-hour Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response Standard (HAZWOPER) certification
  • Familiarity with Michigan EGLE regulations and Part 201 guidance


A hybrid work arrangement may be considered for this position. A hybrid work arrangement refers to splitting time worked between a Barr office and a home office. This position can be based out of Barr's Grand Rapids or Ann Arbor, Michigan offices.
