The Practice collaborates with clients, communities, stakeholders, and Hatch's engineering teams to create mutually beneficial and sustainable infrastructure, metals, and energy projects. Inclusion and collaboration with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples and communities is the key to successful project delivery based on the following four principles:

  • Engage early, openly, and honestly in a sustained manner with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples and communities.
  • Build long-term and mutually beneficial relationships with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples and businesses.
  • Promote opportunities, with our clients and within Hatch that foster engagement and participation with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples.
  • Respect the rights of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples to maintain and strengthen their own institutions, cultures, and traditions, and to pursue their development in keeping with their needs, aspirations, and strengths.


In a practice that is growing, you will be part of Hatch's Community Engagement and Social Performance (CESP) team within the Environmental and Sustainability (E&S) Practice. The team's main objective is to collaborate with clients, communities, stakeholders, and Hatch's engineering teams to create mutually beneficial and sustainable metals, energy, and infrastructure projects. The opportunity is unique: Hatch's wealth of technical engineering experience combined with community insights creates an inclusive vision for clients' projects - and we are helping to make this a reality.

Hatch is currently seeking to recruit a Principal, Cultural Engagement Specialist to be an integral part of a growing practice. The role will report to the Director Community Engagement and Social Performance, Australia and Asia. You will be the technical Cultural Engagement expert responsible for leading projects across Australia with opportunities to also participate in global initiatives.
In this role, you will act autonomously as a key company contact point for communication and engagement with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples, assist clients to partner with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples to facilitate the codesign and implementation of culturally safe and appropriate models of engagement and support clients to identify and progress benefits realisation opportunities through proactive partnerships, and social investment and livelihood initiatives.

Additional accountabilities of the Principal Indigenous Engagement Specialist are:
  • Maintain highly effective stakeholder relations for cultural heritage delivery tracking compliance against agreements and associated reports.
  • Support the development of local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander employment and procurement plans and assist clients to facilitate the development of education, training, and business development partnerships with Indigenous Peoples, communities, other organisations, and government entities.
  • Record, research, identify and anticipate any Indigenous relations risks to project development and for communities, including solutions to meet these challenges.
  • Assist resource and infrastructure companies to meet industry best practice in the development and delivery of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander socioeconomic commitments and plans.
  • Assist clients and E&S through consultation with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples for environmental and social impact assessments.
  • Participate as a subject matter expert on due diligence and advisory panels for investors and lenders.
  • Identify client opportunities with project managers across the Hatch organisation and externally.
  • Share your experiences at speaking and networking events and on social media.
  • Undertake project management tasks on behalf of clients throughout the life cycle of client projects from exploration to project development, operations, and closure.
  • Understand legacy relationships and risks to provide guidance on how impacts on project activity as well as on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples and communities can be avoided, managed and mitigated.
  • Provide guidance on and support delivery of social investment programs to Aboriginal communities.
  • Support the Human Resources team to develop strategies to maximise Indigenous employment and retention.


Essential skills and qualifications:

  • Degree qualified in anthropology, social sciences, public policy, sustainability, law, business, or a related field; advanced degree preferred.
  • Demonstrated experience with the development and implementation of innovative Indigenous engagement programs that make a meaningful positive development impact for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and their livelihood.
  • Minimum of 10 years' Indigenous relations experience across the project lifecycle on major projects in complex cultural and socio-political environments.
  • A record of successful engagement with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander s communities regarding Cultural Heritage processes and agreements.
  • Strong Knowledge of Commonwealth and State legislative requirements with respect to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Cultural Heritage.
  • Working knowledge of Native Title legislation preferred.
  • Expertise in technical planning, program design and execution.
  • Robust understanding of emerging sustainability principles and experience applying international performance standards and other development finance and project financier, and client requirements including project planning and engagement that demonstrates free, prior, and informed consent with Indigenous Peoples.
  • Country exposure - Extensive Australian experience is desirable and broader Asia Pacific experience highly regarded.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication and presentation skills.
  • Creative and approachable with a willingness to recommend innovative solutions to clients.
  • Willingness for both domestic and international travel as work requires.
  • Effective, open communication and presentation style with the ability to plan and deliver best in class, high quality deliverables.
  • A willingness to proactively meet clients' needs whether big or small.
