Job Description:

Summary:

Barr is seeking an engineering student to work on projects involving geotechnical engineering and related technical assignments. The person in this position will work on tailings management projects involving material strength characterization and seepage, slope stability, and consolidation analyses. The work will include geotechnical computer modeling; specifying and interpreting soil and rock investigations, including drilling and cone penetrometer testing; overseeing on-site and laboratory material testing; and installing instrumentation.

Work also involves completing geotechnical and civil aspects of alternatives analyses and feasibility studies as well as preparing plans and specifications, reports, and cost estimates. The position may also entail fieldwork, such as construction observation, subsurface investigations, in-situ testing, surveying, facility inspections, and managing selected project tasks for scope, schedule, and budget compliance. In addition, this position requires periodic out-of-town assignments. All applicants must attach transcripts to their application.

Minimum Qualifications:
  • GPA of 3.2/4.0
  • Strong interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills
  • Ongoing enrollment in an ABET-accredited civil, geotechnical, or geological engineering degree program
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Windows OS and Microsoft Office software
  • Conscientiousness concerning the accuracy, appropriateness, and timeliness of results
  • Thorough, organized, detail-oriented, and self-motivated approach
  • Legal authorization to work in the United States without the need for sponsorship
  • Acceptable driving record and ability to rent a car for out-of-town assignments


Preferred Qualifications:
  • GPA of 3.5/4.0
  • Familiarity with gINT and modeling software (such as GeoStudio, FLAC, Plaxis)
  • Completed at least one semester of upper division (junior/senior/graduate level) engineering coursework


A hybrid or remote work arrangement may be considered for this position. A hybrid arrangement refers to splitting time worked between a Barr office and a home office; a remote arrangement refers working primarily from a home office. This position is based out of Barr's Minneapolis, Minnesota, office. Remote arrangements will be considered based on candidate qualifications, location requirements, and Barr's needs.

Compensation:

The anticipated base salary range for this position is $21.30-$21.80/hour. Compensation will vary based upon experience, education, skill level, and other compensable factors.

NOTE: Some work locations may feature rough terrain typical of construction sites or working on tall structures or with industrial equipment. Safety training will be provided prior to being given work assignments on such sites.
