The Safety and Health Lead oversees and provides direct supervision and leadership to the Response Chief, the Fire System Service Technicians, and the Safety and Health Officers

Rotation schedule will be an even rotation, 2 weeks on-site and 2 weeks off-site

Reporting to the Safety and Health Coordinator

Responsibilities :
  • Be a courageous safety leader, adhere to and sponsor safety and environmental rules and procedures
  • Work directly with the Safety & Health Coordinator to ensure all Safety & Health Team activities are aligned with the goals and objectives of the current Safety & Health Team plans and vision
  • Fill in as the Safety and Health Coordinator frequently and Superintendent occasionally in their absence or required
  • Oversee and provide direct supervision and leadership of the Response Chief, Safety and Health Officers, and Fire System Service Technicians
  • Coach and mentor direct reports in their development; sets clear performance and conduct expectations
  • Set, prioritize, and supervise the completion of short-term objectives for direct reports
  • Ensure the proper fire system maintenance and operation or personnel mobile and stationary equipment fire protection systems in accordance with local, state and federal requirements
  • Ensure the readiness and preparedness of emergency fire, HAZMAT spill response, MERT, security, and the Incident Management Team (IMT)
  • Ensure ERT drills and exercises and planned, scheduled and successfully executed in accordance with the annual ERT Plan
  • Assign Safety & Health Officer support to the Industrial Hygienist for the collection of dust and noise sampling, air monitoring and biological monitoring
  • Actively participate and provide leadership to Teck and Contractor personnel in identification and communication of workplace hazards, at risk behaviors, and unsafe work practices and conditions
  • Ensure all employees and contractors working at the operation are in compliance with the proper hazard recognition and mitigation training before work is initiated
  • Direct audits of safety standards for compliance regarding governmental regulatory agencies, Teck HSEC Standards, and the Red Dog Operations Health and Safety requirements
  • Assist government inspectors in their inspections and investigations. Documents and communicates the findings of inspections and investigations with the site management team
  • Participate and provide leadership, knowledge and support during supervisor incident investigations
  • Participate in ICAM incident investigations; this will include facilitation, lead investigator and subject matter expert roles
  • Support the development and facilitation of aspects for training programs related to supervisory skills or overall safety and health within the property
  • Participate in security as required for the property mine, port and airport in accordance with the State and Federal regulations which includes non-lethal and lethal methods
  • Participate and conduct security training and firearm instruction. The Safety & Health Lead will supervise the security team in the absence of the S&H Coordinator
  • Participate and provide guidance in monthly safety meetings, tool box meetings, SIMOPS meetings, Field Level Risk Assessment (FLRA) and Job Safety Analysis (JSA)
  • Highly encouraged to become a volunteer Courageous Safety Leadership facilitator
  • Perform other duties as assigned


Qualifications :
  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • 3-5 years' experience in an Operational Health & Safety Supervisory role is required
  • Must possess knowledge and understanding of Federal, State and Local laws and regulations regarding occupational safety and health
  • Demonstrate strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to work in a team environment and work effectively across all levels of the business
  • Must be able to collaborate and effectively communicate with managers, supervisors, and crew members
  • Must be capable of providing written reports to management, supplying all pertinent information on safety performance and highlighting problem areas
  • Must have an ability to conduct investigations, determine causes and recommend or initiate corrective preventative measures
  • Experience in the mining industry is preferred
  • Experience in Emergency Response and Incident Command is an asset
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook)
