Job Description

What You'll Do

The Credit Risk team sits within Marketing's Risk & Compliance department and supports Marketing's overall objectives by ensuring that credit risk of our counterparties is well managed, thereby reducing credit losses, and any risks are articulated clearly and timely to management and stakeholders. The team achieves this by ensuring that the counterparties are assessed, rated and appropriate credit risk tolerance levels are determined and respected.

The Credit Risk Specialist is responsible for assessment and monitoring of credit exposure for all counterparties within the assigned portfolio, as well as provide solutions and value-add to the business by engaging in due diligence discussions and giving guidance on credit policy and risk appetite. It is a critical and highly visible role with accountability towards managing credit and counterparty risk across Marketing's multi-billion dollar global portfolio spread across multiple countries, industry sectors, counterparts with risks originating from both physical as well as financial transactions.

In this role, you will cover a portfolio of mainly European counterparties and actively communicate with the various commodity sales and trading desks to fully understand the risk nature of the transactions requiring analysis and approval. You will use your analytical and technical skills to develop an independent and informed view of the counterparty's and the transaction's risk profile.

The Credit Risk Specialist will contribute beyond day-to-day credit risk management, including c redit portfolio reporting, deep dive analysis, contribution to policy improvements, projects and system initiatives . The role holder will exercise judgement to balance achieving an appropriate risk and reward return for the business, engage strongly with stakeholders and collaborate with cross-functional teams to deliver key business initiatives.

Performance & Delivery

Leadership
  • Be the lead point of contact for the European Front Office teams regarding all credit risk inputs and transactions.
  • Lead meetings and discussions independently with the stakeholders to drive the required outcomes on all credit risk matters.
  • Manage the Credit Risk Analyst and support in development guiding junior members of the team, contributing to a strong and supportive team environment.
  • Keep abreast of industry best practices and apply those to identify improvement opportunities in regard to policy, process and procedures.

Credit Analysis and Advisory
  • End-to-end ownership of the assigned commodity portfolio by completing credit reviews in a timely manner and ensuring zero backlog.
  • Prepare credit reviews for new and existing counterparts that highlight current and potential risks in a clear and succinct manner, and make clear recommendations to mitigate the identified risks.
  • Conduct proactive research, analyze financial statements and evaluate all available qualitative and quantitative information on counterparties to determine internal ratings and appropriate credit limits to ensure exposure remains within Marketing's internal risk appetite.
  • Engage with Front Office teams on early-stage potential transactions to communicate credit views and challenges on commercial proposals.
  • Structure appropriate credit protections (primarily credit insurance and discounting) by engaging with Front Office teams, with a view to optimize risk versus reward.
  • Work actively with counterparts, Group Legal and other internal stakeholders in negotiating credit terms and credit support instruments as part of the documentation process for sales & purchase contracts and master trading agreements, including ISDA/CSA.
  • Assist with relevant data requests and credit risk insights across the business to ensure accurate data and robust insight feed into other parts of the business.

Portfolio Monitoring and Reporting
  • Proactively keep track and monitor allocated portfolio from a counterpart, industry and country risk perspective and be accountable for highlighting all adverse credit news in a timely and accurate manner. This will require close and frequent communication with Front Office teams to ensure a deep understanding of counterparties (including risk factors impacting specific portfolio).
  • Examine daily credit reports to review exposures, limits, utilization levels across the portfolio. Monitor credit ratings and risk profiles to identify any emerging risk trends within the portfolio.
  • Ensure credit files are kept up-to-date at all times, all relevant information is updated in systems and all supporting documents are filed timely.

Process Improvement
  • Support new business initiatives by providing guidance from a risk perspective. Participate actively in assigned cross-functional projects, including contributing to change initiatives, to realize greater efficiencies.
  • Drive standardisation and automation of processes to achieve continual improvements. Initiate and participate in system enhancements.
  • Ensure credit processes maintain consistency with relevant governance framework documents.

Qualifications

What we're looking for

  • At least 5 years relevant experience with credit analysis, particularly reviewing cashflow projections and conducting analysis of financial statements.
  • Understanding of exposure to credit risk within a commodity trading environment.
  • Broad product knowledge and competence in the analysis of trade finance, traditional/structured transactions and derivatives.
  • Good understanding of different sector risk dynamics, drivers and fundamentals, with an ability to apply this in the analysis of the counterparty's business and financial risks.
  • Familiarity with risk management concepts used in different types of physical transactions that are typical within commodities trading.
  • Good with credit management systems like Bloomberg, S&P Capital IQ, Cubelogic etc.
