Job Description

The purpose of this role is to perform routine mineralogical investigations involving characterisation and quantification of geological materials and process products.

Key responsibilities:
  • Ensures that Safety, Health, Environment and Quality (SHEQ) issues are considered in all activities, with adherence to safety standards and procedures.
  • Proactively identifies, monitors and mitigates SHE risks in accordance with Anglo American standards.
  • Encourages personal accountability.
  • Ensures that SHEQ issues are considered in all activities. Ensures that all staff, contractors and suppliers under direction are in compliance with Anglo American's Health, Safety and Environment management systems.
  • Ensures equipment that is not safe to use is properly locked out and isolated.
  • Completion of risk assessments e.g., CRA (continuous risk assessment), SLAM (stop look assess manage) etc.
  • Participation in the SHEQ structure.
  • Support the Section Manager-Routine Services to define and apply the required standards and specifications relevant to routine mineralogy services.
  • Develop an understanding of all unit processes within the department. Apply mineralogical processes and principles to support mineralogy specialists and technologists. This includes supporting the Section Manager in identifying areas of improvement.
  • Prepare task assignments (defining context, purpose, quality, quantity and resources required) for projects, demonstrating the relevance of the project to the operation.
  • Manage routine projects through close liaison with other members of the team.
  • Effectively applies project and resource management tools and techniques within own role.
  • Undertakes technical analysis activities in own area.
  • Collects and assesses evidence, generates and evaluates options and shares recommendations.
  • Effective and appropriate use of equipment and facilities (QEMSCAN, MLA, TIMA, XRD, Optical Microscopes, XRF, XRM).
  • Set-up and perform high quality analytical runs.
  • Acquisition of accurate mineralogical data and high-quality technical reports delivered on schedule and within budget.
  • Keep up to date with developments in the mineralogy field.
  • Continuously improve productivity and methods.
  • Conduct Planned Task Observations (PTOs).
  • Other activities as requested by the Section Manager.


Qualifications

  • B.Sc. (Hons), B.Eng in Mineralogy, Geology, Metallurgy or related Science. B. Tech with relevant experience may be considered.
  • M.Sc. in Mineralogy, Geology, Metallurgy or related Science would be advantageous.
  • Background in mineralogy and geology will be advantageous.
  • Computer skills.
  • Driver's license or ability to obtain a driver's license.

Role specific knowledge:
  • Understands the principles of mineralogy and relevant tools and techniques to support mineralogical investigations.
  • Proven experience working in a mineralogy laboratory.
  • Use of Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) and X-ray diffractometer (XRD).
  • Proven experience in the minerals or related industry.
  • Time management is critical to the role.
