Job Description
Lead a team of professional and technical metallurgists to maximize operational efficiencies in all areas of the mill with a focus on complying with Environmental, Health and Safety (EHS) requirements.
Support and promote an environment of participatory management, employee ownership, and continuous improvement of analytical and metallurgical laboratory operations.
Ensure the metallurgical process: comminution, flotation, carbon-in leach (CIL), carbon handling, refining, cyanide destruction; operates at a high level of technical performance.
Investigate and implement opportunities to improve productivity and align them with the organizations overall strategy.
Active participation in Gold Standards program which may include participatory management practices including root cause analysis, statistical process control (SPC) and lean manufacturing.
Investigate options and recommend short and long-term projects and approaches to enhance efficiency and cost-effectiveness of the metallurgical and processing systems and analysis.
Responsible for maintaining compliance with the international cyanide management code which includes adherence to process control systems including advanced process control techniques.
Attend production, metallurgy, ore supply meetings and maintain required channels of communication between departments.
Responsible and accountable for metallurgical accounting procedures which include capital preparation, forecasting and budget spreadsheet for short term planning and identification of future capital requirements to meet Life of Mine (LOM).
Prepare Authorization for Expenditure (AFE) and management of capital spent.
Promote and communicate budget targets to all work teams through the use of word processing, spreadsheet and presentation programs so everyone understands requirements.
Stand in for the Processing Manager in his absence.
Qualifications
Masters degree or the foreign equivalent in Metallurgical and Materials Engineering, Mineral Process Engineering, or a closely related field, plus 5 years of experience in a metallurgist or precious metals processing occupation.
The required experience must include each of the following:
5 years of experience working with Environmental, Health and Safety (EHS) requirements.
5 years of experience working comminution, flotation, carbon-in leach (CIL), carbon handling, refining, cyanide destruction.
5 years of experience working with analytical and metallurgical laboratory operations.
5 years of experience working with principles and methods used in complex metallurgical and processing systems and analyses.
5 years of experience working with plant process control systems including advanced process control techniques.
5 years of experience working with Metallurgical accounting procedures and gold standards protocols.
5 years of experience working with participatory management practices including root cause analysis, statistical process control (SPC) and lean manufacturing.
5 years of experience working with word processing, spreadsheet and presentation programs.
Any and all experience may be gained concurrently.
Or
Bachelors degree or the foreign equivalent in Metallurgical and Materials Engineering, Mineral Process Engineering, or a closely related field, plus 7 years of experience in a metallurgist or precious metals processing occupation.
The required experience must include each of the following:

- Excellent and demonstrated commitment to safety & health, interacting with maintenance shop personnel to ensure activities are completed without compromise to the safety and health of all personnel.
- Focus on "visible felt leadership" spending at minimum 50% of time interacting with the technicians.
- Ensure key performance measures are actively reviewed with the technicians targeting fleet availability.
- Positive and enthusiastic team member, seeking to assist and mentor others.
- Rigorous and thorough management for completing scheduled / unscheduled activities to minimize the production impact of the equipment being down for maintenance activities.
- Actively and constructively communicate opportunities for improvement / development to technicians consistently updating individuals as to their current job performance.
- Maintain rigorous housekeeping habits of all maintenance work areas.
- Maintain maintenance shift reports, area inspections, planned general inspections, dispatch reporting data and employee evaluations.
- Maintain good working relationships with key vendors / manufacturers such as Linder (Komatsu), Blanchard (Cat)
- Provide technical support and training to the PM and repair technicians.
- Submit - at minimum - one Field Level Risk Assessment daily.
Physical Requirements:
- While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, sit, demonstrate manual dexterity, climb stairs, talk, hear and see.
- Must be Fit for Duty: Able to lift and carry 50lbs overhead, climb ladders, work at heights, etc.
- Must be able to work in adverse weather conditions: wind, rain, sun.
- Work is in a surface mine setting, which may include exposure to extremes in temperature and humidity.
- Personal protective equipment is required when performing work in a mine environment, including hard hat, hearing protection, safety glasses, safety footwear, and as needed, respirator, rubber steel-toe boots, protective clothing, gloves, and any other protective equipment as required.
