JOB TITLE: Environmental sustainability Intern
POSITION OVERVIEW: The Environmental Scientist Intern will support environmental sustainability efforts across various ASARCO operations. This role provides a hands-on opportunity to learn and assist in integrating sustainability practices into the mining industry while ensuring compliance with company policies and environmental guidelines. The intern will gain exposure to real-world environmental challenges and solutions, with a focus on compliance, conservation, and sustainability initiatives.

The intern will gain exposure to real-world environmental challenges and solutions, with a focus on compliance, conservation, and sustainability initiatives.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Assist environmental teams in identifying and managing sustainability risks by supporting the implementation of effective controls and solutions.
- Participate in projects that drive environmental compliance, fostering a culture of environmental protection and improvement across all operations.
- Contribute to the measurement and reporting of environmental performance, using qualitative and quantitative data to support sustainability objectives.
- Learn about and assist with the review of sustainability guidelines such as ISO, ICMM, and Copper Mark to identify overlap and optimization opportunities.
- Support the identification of gaps in sustainability practices and assist in developing action plans related to biodiversity, water, and waste management.
- Assist in conducting ecological assessments to support biodiversity conservation efforts, including habitat preservation and the protection of endangered species.
- Provide support to the environmental teams on various sustainability projects and initiatives.
- Participate in site visits and fieldwork as required, gaining exposure to different facets of environmental monitoring and sustainability efforts.
- Collaborate with site Environmental Department staff on various tasks and projects.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
- Basic knowledge of sustainability metrics and environmental standards, particularly within the mining industry.
- Interest in learning about federal, state, and local environmental laws, administrative regulations, and permits.
- Familiarity with Microsoft Office applications, including Excel, Word, Outlook Teams, and PowerPoint.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to work outdoors in various mining environments and weather conditions and over rough terrain, occasionally lifting up to 30 pounds.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
- Currently pursuing a bachelor's degree in environmental science, sustainability, or a related field.
- Interest in sustainability and environmental initiatives, with a passion for conservation and resource management.
- Previous internships or coursework related to environmental science or sustainability is a plus.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
- Must be able to commute to the ASARCO Mission Mine in Sahaurita, AZ)
- Ability to work in various weather conditions and occasionally perform fieldwork.
- Ability to work in active mining environments, both outdoor open mine pits and industrial facilities.
