Round Mountain is an open-pit mine located in Nevada, one of the best mining jurisdictions in the world. The mine uses conventional open-pit mining methods and processes ore by mill and heap leach. Kinross began operating the mine in 2003, and it has since become a continuous improvement leader in the Company's portfolio. Round Mountain poured its 15 millionth ounce in 2018. Round Mountain and the nearby Bald Mountain mine make up Kinross' Nevada operations.

The Round Mountain mine is an important contributor to the Nye County economy and, working with local stakeholders, has helped achieve significant improvements in healthcare and education in the area.

Job Summary

Under the direction of the Sr. Environmental Engineer, assist with the implementation of programs and procedures to ensure environmental compliance for Round Mountain Gold Corporation. Participate in the development of environmental management plans, monitoring plans, and permit applications. Responsible for data management including on-site document and compliance management. Ensure that sampling, monitoring, and inspections are conducted in accordance with company requirements and in compliance with local, state and federal environmental regulations and licenses. Will conduct all activities in a safe manner and align performance and daily functions to reflect Kinross' values.

Essential Functions

  • Conduct compliance sampling, including but not limited to, surface water sampling, groundwater sampling, soil sampling and/or other materials as required by regulatory framework.
  • Support maintenance of environmental monitoring databases, and other permit requirements to provide data and reports required for permit compliance.
  • Use sound judgment to ensure RMGC compliance with the requirements of environmental permits, licenses, and regulations, focusing on monitoring, record-keeping and reporting requirements.
  • Support preparation of technical reports, permit applications, and environmental documentation (e.g., NEPA-related documents, WPCP, TRI, etc.)
  • Conduct basic engineering calculations and analyses
  • Coordinate with internal production and technical teams
  • Effectively communicate with site personnel regarding regulatory obligations.
  • Conduct regular inspections, in accordance with the RMGC Environmental Department procedures, of company operations to ensure regulatory compliance.
  • Identify and report compliance or permitting issues to supervisor.
  • Comply with all company policies and procedures including, but not limited to safety, environmental, confidentiality and code of conduct.
  • Meet or exceed the performance expectations established by management.
  • Punctuality and regular attendance required.
  • Perform other functions as assigned by supervisor.


  • Qualifications and Skill Requirements

  • A Bachelor's or Master's degree in environmental science or engineering. A degree in a related scientific or engineering discipline will be considered (e.g., biology, ecology, chemistry, hydrology, natural resources, and civil or mining engineering, etc.).
  • Willingness to work outdoors, often in adverse weather conditions (required).
  • Able to lift and carry up to 50 lbs. over short distances (required).
  • Previous experience in the mining industry and /or performing monitoring and sampling (preferred). Certification as a drinking water operator is a plus.
  • Strong technical and analytical skills.
  • Strong organizational and administrative skills.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Able to work as part of a team, in cooperation with other departments at RMGC.
  • Experienced and skilled using the following software packages: Microsoft Word, Excel, Power Point, Access or other database software.
  • Preference will be given to experience using the following: "Monitor Pro" or other environmental database, Electronic records/obligations management system, AutoCAD, JDE or other software for procurement of goods & services, Map 3D or QGIS other GIS software, GoldSim.
  • Preference may be given to working experience at an open pit gold mine and experience in Nevada.
  • Must be at least 18 years old and authorized to work in the United States on a full-time basis.
  • Must have a valid driver's license.
