Coeur Alaska’s Kensington mine comprises an underground, hard-rock gold mine, associated milling facilities and a campsite in the historic Berners Bay Mining District, 45 miles north-northwest of Juneau. The mine is accessed via company transportation including bus rides and a boat ride through Lynn Canal.

Approximately 400 miners, mechanics, engineers, operators, geologists, environmental technicians, exploration, and business leaders operate the Kensington mine. About the Job:

The Environmental Technician will report to the Environmental Coordinator and is responsible for safe and efficient sampling, data collection, and assistance with regulatory reporting. Additionally, the Environmental Technician will be responsible for conducting inspections and or monitoring related to air, water and waste compliance programs. The schedule for this position is 4 days on at the remote mine site located about 45-miles north of Juneau, accessible only through company transportation, and 3 days off with the occasional 8 days on/6 days off schedule for required weekend coverage.

Responsibilities:
  • Stop work for safety concerns, and abide by safety best practices, policies and procedures
  • Perform soil, groundwater, surface water, waste, sediment and air sampling
  • Perform manual stream flow measurements and associated hydrology monitoring
  • Perform employee environmental awareness training as needed
  • Collect, review and analyze environmental data
  • Input data into an environmental database
  • Use field instruments and equipment as necessary to meet health and safety as well as field sampling and O&M requirements
  • Assist with preparation of routine submittals to regulatory agencies to document system performance and compliance with permit requirements
  • Document all field activities and notes
  • Perform subcontractor oversight
  • Communicate effectively with project managers and client personnel
  • Has a high degree of health and safety awareness
  • Works within defined scopes, schedules and budgets while producing quality work
  • Maintains knowledge of sampling procedures and protocols in accordance with recognized industry standards
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Required Qualifications & Skills:

  • Employees may be frequently exposed to surface and underground work environments; outside weather conditions, wet and/or humid conditions; extreme cold, snow/ice, extreme heat, potentially hazardous wildlife; moving mechanical parts; high precarious places; fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals; risk of electrical shock; explosives and vibration. The noise level in most work environments is usually very loud. This position may require work on nights, weekends and rotating shifts; shift schedules may require residency in remote camp during work rotations
  • Possess good computer knowledge (Microsoft Office applications, e-mail, etc.)
  • Able to work in a remote outdoor environment, often in inclement weather
  • Periodically work in an underground mine setting
  • Able to hike several miles over uneven ground
  • Work occasional weekends as scheduled
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision and communicate clearly (verbally and in writing) with all mine site personnel.
  • Sets high standards for self and others, builds trust, and takes accountability.

Preferred Qualifications & Skills:
  • Associate’s or bachelor’s degree in environmental sciences or applied sciences preferred
  • Approximately 1-3 years of environmental field experience in an industrial setting preferred
  • Preference given to Alaska residents.

Physical Demands:

This position requires the ability to safely perform work in a mining environment, including, but not limited to:

  • Working outdoors in a range of environmental conditions, including rain, snow, ice, wind, cold temperatures, and periods of limited daylight.
  • Frequent standing and walking on uneven surfaces on surface and underground.
  • Climbing stairs, ladders, and escapeways.
  • Lifting and carrying up to 30 pounds often and up to 50 pounds on occasion, pushing and pulling equipment or materials up to 50 pounds, bending, kneeling, crouching, and reaching.
  • Employees must be able to wear required PPE, including respiratory protection when applicable, work in varying environmental conditions, and participate in emergency response and evacuation procedures.

Coeur Alaska provides relocation assistance for positions that require residency in Juneau, Alaska.

Mine Site Information:

The Kensington Mine is located within the historic Berners Bay Mining District, a region with deep mining roots that date back over a century. The mine site is a remote camp located approximately 45 miles outside of Juneau, Alaska. Transportation to and from the mine site happens twice per day (once in the morning and once in the afternoon) and takes approximately 1.5 hours each way. To get to the mine site, employees board a bus in Juneau that transports to the Yankee Cove dock (~30 minutes), then board a boat (~45 minutes), then board another bus to the camp area (~15 minutes). Food and housing is provided on-site to employees. Rooms are dormitory style with two twin beds, a TV, and storage for your personal belongings.
