Role Summary

The Head of Mining is responsible for the overall leadership, management, and performance of all underground mining operations. The role provides strategic and operational direction to ensure mining activities are conducted safely, efficiently, and in accordance with approved mine plans, regulatory requirements, and company objectives.

As a member of the Site Leadership Team, the Head of Mining works closely with Geology, Technical Services, Maintenance, Processing, Safety, and Contractor Management teams to support operational performance, sustainable growth, and the long-term success of the organisation.

Key Responsibilities Safety, Health, Environment and Community

  • Demonstrate visible leadership and commitment to the company's safety values and standards.
  • Ensure that all mining operations are carried out in compliance with applicable mining legislation, statutory obligations, company policies, and site procedures.
  • Lead proactive hazard identification, risk management, and incident prevention programs.
  • Lead investigations of incidents and monitor implementation of corrective actions.
  • Ensure compliance with environmental obligations and support community engagement initiatives as required.
  • Encourage a safety-focused environment with an emphasis on accountability and continuous improvement.
Mining Operations Management

  • Provide overall leadership and direction for underground mining operations.
  • Ensure safe and efficient execution of mine development, production, ground support, ventilation, mine services, and associated mining activities.
  • Deliver approved production and development targets in accordance with mine plans and business objectives.
  • Monitor operational performance and implement corrective actions where required.
  • Ensure optimal utilisation of mining equipment, personnel, and contractor resources.
  • Lead daily, weekly, and monthly operational planning and performance review processes.
  • Drive continuous improvement initiatives to improve productivity, efficiency, and operational effectiveness.
Mine Planning and Technical Integration

  • Work closely with Technical Services and Geology teams to develop and execute short, medium, and long-term mine plans.
  • Ensure mining activities are aligned with approved schedules and production forecasts.
  • Participate in mine design reviews, planning meetings, and operational strategy development.
  • Provide operational input into resource development, production planning, and mine optimisation initiatives.
  • Monitor mining performance against plan and identify opportunities for improvement.
Leadership and People Management

  • Lead, mentor, and develop Mining Superintendents, Shift Bosses, Supervisors, Engineers, and operational personnel.
  • Build and maintain a high-performing team culture focused on safety, accountability, and operational excellence.
  • Support succession planning, workforce development, and talent management initiatives.
  • Ensure effective performance management processes are implemented across the department.
  • Promote employee engagement and maintain positive working relationships throughout the workforce.
Contractor Management

  • Manage mining contractors to ensure contractual obligations, safety standards, and operational expectations are achieved.
  • Monitor contractor performance, productivity, and compliance with site requirements.
  • Participate in contractor selection, mobilisation, performance reviews, and contract management processes.
Financial and Commercial Management

  • Prepare and manage departmental budgets and forecasts.
  • Monitor operational expenditure and ensure cost performance remains within approved budgets.
  • Identify opportunities to improve productivity and reduce operating costs.
  • Support procurement, capital expenditure planning, and business improvement initiatives.
  • Provide accurate operational reporting and performance analysis to senior management.
Compliance and Governance

  • Ensure all mining activities comply with statutory requirements and applicable mining regulations.
  • Maintain compliance with the Mine Safety Management System and company policies.
  • Support audits, inspections, and regulatory reporting requirements.
  • Ensure all operational documentation, records, and reports are maintained accurately and submitted on time.

Key Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills and Experience
  • Degree in Mining Engineering or related discipline.
  • Metalliferous Mine Manager's Certificate of Competency (CoC) or eligibility to obtain.
  • Current Driver's Licence.
  • Relevant statutory and safety certifications applicable to underground mining operations.
  • Minimum 10 years' experience in underground mining operations.
  • Minimum 5 years' experience in a senior mining leadership position such as Mining Manager, Mine Manager, Underground Manager, or equivalent.
  • Demonstrated experience managing underground production and development operations.
  • Strong experience in narrow-vein underground mining operations is highly desirable.
  • Proven experience managing multidisciplinary operational teams and contractors.
  • Experience operating within remote FIFO mining environments.
  • Strong understanding of mining legislation, operational risk management, and compliance requirements.
  • Strong leadership and people management skills.
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder engagement capability.
  • Strategic thinking and operational planning ability.
