Main Objective
The Mine Captain directs and controls underground mining activities to ensure the safe, compliant, and efficient execution of the mine plan. The position coordinates production, development, construction, services, and the deployment of personnel assigned to underground areas and teams.
Job Responsibilities
The successful candidate will be responsible for, among other duties:
- Providing visible leadership in underground safety.
- Conducting workplace inspections.
- Verifying pre-start risk assessments, permits, and critical controls.
- Stopping dangerous work and ensuring that incidents, hazards, and near misses are reported, investigated, and corrective action is taken.
- Implementing the approved mining plan, including shift, daily, and weekly production and development plans.
- Coordinating teams, equipment, tunnels, and priorities to achieve tonnage and ore delivery targets without compromising safety or quality.
- Ensuring that drilling, loading, blasting, re-entry, clearing, stripping, and support operations are carried out in the proper order and in accordance with approved standards.
- Coordinating clearing, exclusions, and post-blasting inspections.
- Ensuring excavations are inspected, measured, and shored up according to plans.
- Checking signage and restricted areas and coordinating required actions.
- Ensuring adequate geotechnical conditions, ventilation, services, lighting, drainage, and access before work begins.
- Leading team leaders, supervisors, and teams.
- Allocating manpower and equipment.
- Conducting pre-shift briefings and end-of-shift handovers.
- Coaching front-line managers.
- Managing attendance, discipline, skills, and performance in accordance with company procedures.
- Coordinating mobile equipment, fixed services, and maintenance priorities to optimize the availability of underground infrastructure.
- Ensuring workplaces have the necessary electricity, water, compressed air, pumping systems, means of communication, and materials required to implement the mine plan.
- Collaborating with geology and surveying services to maintain the accuracy of mine boundaries, ore and waste rock identification, grade control, and extraction sequence.
- Minimizing dilution, ore losses, and contamination and ensuring the accuracy of production reports.
Required Knowledge and Skills
- Solid practical knowledge of underground hard rock mining methods and the complete mining cycle.
- Solid knowledge of drilling and blasting practices, load controls, blast area clearance, and re-entry requirements.
- Good understanding of site control, dimensioning, installation of supports, and geotechnical risks.
- Practical knowledge of underground ventilation, drainage, services, traffic management, and emergency response.
- Ability to interpret mining plans, development plans, topographic information, production schedules, and operating standards.
- Strong skills in frontline leadership, team coordination, problem-solving, and decision-making.
- Ability to identify operational risks, apply critical controls, and stop unsafe work.
- Good skills in production reporting, data analysis, and written communication.
- Ability to work effectively under pressure in a 24/7 underground mining environment.
- Ability to safely carry out underground production and development activities.
- Ability to coordinate drilling, blasting, loading, transport, ground support, and services across multiple work sites.
- Ability to inspect workplaces and verify compliance with mining standards, critical controls, and safe work procedures.
- Ability to read and apply mining plans, production schedules, ground control instructions, and ventilation requirements.
- Skills in shift reporting, production monitoring, and the basic use of mining and office digital systems.
- Fluency in French; proficiency in operational English is an asset.
- Ability to provide leadership, task allocation, coaching, performance feedback, and effective shift handovers.
- Ability to ensure compliance with approved mining plans, operating standards, permits, and legal requirements.
- Demonstrated strong leadership, discipline, responsibility, and visible presence on the ground.
- Competence in incident reporting, basic investigations, and follow-up of corrective measures.
Experience Requirements
- Minimum of 7 years of experience in underground hard rock mining, including at least 3 years in a front-line supervisory role such as Team Leader, Mine Supervisor, or equivalent.
- Proven experience supervising underground production and development teams in mechanized mining operations.
- Practical experience in drilling and blasting cycles, ground support, ventilation, and mobile mining equipment.
- Proven experience safely delivering production, coordinating teams, and resolving operational problems.
- Work experience in the areas of mine planning, geology, topographic surveys, geotechnics, maintenance, and HSE functions.
- Prior experience in a remote or shift-operated mining operation is desirable.
Qualifications, Requirements and Personal Skills
Candidates should have:
- An Engineering degree, Bachelor's degree, or Advanced Technician Diploma in Mining Engineering, Mining Operations, or a related field, with a specialization or significant experience in underground mining; and/or
- Extensive experience as a Mine Captain and/or in safety systems; and/or
- A diploma or qualification in skills certification and/or SHE systems, Mining Engineering, Mining Technology, or a related technical field.
- Willingness and ability to work shifts and spend significant time underground.
- A solid understanding of the risks associated with underground mines and emergency procedures.
- Meticulous workplace inspection, production checks, and shift handover skills.
- The ability to safely carry out underground production and development activities.
- The ability to coordinate drilling, blasting, loading, transport, ground support, and services across multiple work sites.
