Phu Bia Mining Limited is a Lao-registered company, 90 per cent owned by PanAust, an Australian-headquartered copper and gold mining company, with the Government of Laos owning the remaining 10 per cent. Phu Bia Mining owns and operates two award winning operations - Phu Kham Copper-Gold and Ban Houayxai Gold-Silver, both located in Xaisomboun Province, 120km north of Vientiane.

Our modern mine camps provide great Lao, Asian and Western food, sport and recreational facilities and housekeeping services. Site-based employees work a roster of 20 days on, 8 days off; 9 days on, 5 days off; or 14 days on, 7 days off for shift work, while Vientiane - based employees work 5 days per week with 2 days off.

Reporting to the Mine Superintendent. The key objective of the Underground Mine Surveyor is the delivery of survey data and service for the BHX Deeps Underground Project, achieving the required project safety, production, and cost performance outcomes; providing survey services for engineering design and implementation of design to all areas covered by the BHX Deeps Underground Project, under the direction of the Senior Mine Surveyor.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Implementation of setting-out of design and pick-up of the field (heading, exploration holes) as requested, measuring and recording precise distances, direction, azimuth and angles on, above, or below the underground working face and drives, including boundary points, topographical features, and other designated markers;
  • Creation of reports and maps according to project requirements containing information from field measurements, boundary markers, and topographical features;
  • Preparation of two-dimensional maps and three-dimensional computer renderings of property features, such as boundary lines, geological points of interest, existing structures, water features, and utility lines; and
  • Verification of the accuracy of survey data, including measurements and calculations conducted at survey sites
  • Record the results of surveys, including the shape, contour, location, elevation, length, and dimensions of underground drives and working faces.
  • Calculation of heights, depths, relative positions, volume, and other characteristics of underground working facilities and project-related surface facilities
  • Coordination with engineering, geotechnical, and geology personnel, project owner, and others concerned with projects
  • Processing and organising survey data and documentation of survey data
  • Providing training to survey technicians as required and assisting in the direction of their work in such activities as performing surveys or drafting maps.
  • Inspection and calibration of survey instruments and maintenance of survey consumables and spare supplies to ensure full survey support for project operation
  • Develop criteria for survey methods and procedures.
  • Implementation of other survey work as required by the project management team
  • Conduct periodic check surveys and verification of the underground wall stations and surface related survey controls
  • Produce survey and mining instructions based on markups and laser installations for development drilling and blasting.

To be successful in this role, you will require:

  • A qualification in Surveying, Mine Surveying, Geomatics, Land Surveying or a related discipline.
  • Recent graduates are encouraged to apply, or ideally 1-2 years of surveying experience in mining, engineering, construction, infrastructure or a related field.
  • A strong interest in developing a career in underground mine surveying and willingness to learn new skills.
  • Basic understanding of surveying and mapping principles.
  • Some experience with survey equipment such as a Total Station or GNSS/GPS will be an advantage.
  • Experience with LiDAR surveying equipment and photogrammetry systems will be highly regarded.
  • Good communication, teamwork, attention to detail and a commitment to working safely in an underground environment.
