Purpose of Role:
The Project Analyst is responsible for providing project controls, financial analysis, cost tracking, schedule monitoring, and analytical support for the Cactus Mine Project. Reporting to the Project Controls Manager (or Head of Project - Cactus), this position tracks project performance, conducts variance and trend analyses, assists with AFE (Authorization for Expenditure) tracking, contract monitoring, and supports pre-feasibility and detailed engineering study deliverables. ROLE ACCOUNTABILITIES:
Financial & Cost Management
- Track, analyze, and report on project budgets, commitments, actual costs, and forecasts across all Cactus Mine project packages.
- Perform detailed cost variance analysis and progress monitoring against project baselines, key performance indicators (KPIs), and milestone schedules (P6 / MS Project).
- Coordinate month-end financial closing activities, work-in-progress (WIP) accruals, and invoice reconciliations in partnership with finance and accounting teams.
- Assist in developing and updating Earned Value Management (EVM) tracking models, trend analysis, and capital expenditure (CAPEX) forecasts.
- Support the evaluation and processing of AFEs, contract requests, and pre-feasibility study (PFS) cost estimates in alignment with Hudbay financial governance standards.
- Responsible for maintaining accurate project cost models, tracking package-level budgets, reviewing contractor invoices and change requests, and supporting CAPEX/OPEX forecast integrity for the Health, Safety, and Project Controls departments.
Reporting, Risk & Compliance
- Assist in preparing monthly financial reports, executive dashboard summaries, cost performance indexes, and stage-gate presentations for project leadership.
- Participate in project risk assessments, risk register updates, and tollgate review support.
- Support internal and external audit reviews, compliance tracking (GAAP / internal controls), and reporting.
- Assist the team in generating reporting content to communicate team decisions
Contract Management & Collaboration
- Support contract management workflows by tracking change orders, contract commitments, contractor man-hours, and vendor expenditure.
- Collaborate with engineering, procurement, construction management (EPCM), and site operations personnel to ensure accurate data flow and interface management.
- Frequent contact with project contractors, engineering consultants, equipment vendors, internal finance/accounting teams, and corporate technical services.
Systems, Data, Leadership & General Duties
- Maintain document control integrity, project cost databases, and historical project records.
- Assist in continuous improvement initiatives for project controls templates, systems, and data analytics tools.
- Direct supervisory responsibility for junior project controls staff or administrative personnel as assigned; provides functional analytical guidance across project packages.
- Perform other related project controls and analytical duties as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS AND EDUCATION:
Education
- Bachelor's degree in Finance, Accounting, Business Administration, Engineering, Construction Management, or related field.
Qualifications
- Minimum 3 to 5 years of progressive experience in project controls, financial analysis, cost engineering, or project management support in mining, heavy civil, industrial construction, or major capital projects.
- Project Management Institute (PMI) CAPM or PMP certification, or AACE International (CCP/EVP) certification preferred.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Solid understanding of project controls principles, cost engineering, forecasting, budgeting, and variance analysis in capital projects.
- Technical proficiency in project scheduling tools (Primavera P6, MS Project) and financial/accounting software (SAP, Excel).
- Familiarity with Earned Value Management (EVM), work breakdown structures (WBS), and contract administration.
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, and quantitative modeling capabilities.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to summarize technical cost data for leadership.
