Responsibilities

Safety
  • Demonstrate visible safety leadership to the team and live the Barrick DNA.
  • Complete safety interactions with mining operations crews at specified intervals and record.
  • Identify hazards in workplaces and rectify and/or report to the supervisor responsible.
  • Report all incidents/ accidents that occur in the workplace.
  • Complete all relevant risk assessments before completing or assigning a task.
  • Compliance with all mine standard operating procedures in design, planning, and execution work.
Design and planning
  • Lead a team of mining engineers to deliver integrated mine plans that ensure value creation.
  • Complete on time, accurate & reliable designs & layouts to enable safe and efficient mining.
  • Life of mine planning, scheduling, cost modelling and compilation of mine reserves.
  • Cut-off grade analysis and cost modelling.
  • Lead mine design work for ventilation and services infrastructure.
  • Review and approve designs, forecasts and technical deliverables.
Drill and Blast
  • Drill & Blast design, analysis, and quality control
  • Develop and lead a team of drill & blast engineers to deliver safe and efficient underground designs.
  • Co-ordinate with operations, geology, geotechnical and survey to align technical plans with site execution.
Cost management
  • Creating and managing operating budget for underground operations.
  • Create capital budgets for operations including AFEs and purchase requisitions.
  • Monthly cost analysis, KPI tracking, reconciliation, and reporting.
Leadership
  • Supervise and manage a team of junior engineers in day-to-day activities.
  • Training and development of graduate engineers to attain relevant skills in UG mining.
  • Supporting mining operations leaders through technical input and operational oversight.
  • Engage and influence other stakeholder departments including mineral resource management, open pit mining and processing to achieve overall team goals.
  • Ensure continuous professional development for self and others in the team.
  • Support continuous improvement, risk management and incident investigations.
Qualification requirements
  • Bachelor's degree in mining/mineral engineering.
  • Practical experience and/or qualification in project management
  • Mines Health & Safety Act Awareness.
Experience and competencies needed.
  • Minimum 8 years in mine planning, drill and blast, ventilation, and operations
  • Proven experience in developing, optimizing, and maintaining long-term and life-of-mine plans.
  • Minimum of 5 years in Underground Mining environment
  • Proficiency in mine planning software (preferably Deswik)
  • At least 3 years' experience as production drill and blast engineer
  • Experience in the Gold Mining Industry
  • Hazard Identification & Risk Assessment.
  • Sound knowledge of workplace safety & health.
  • Able to drive manual transmission vehicles
  • Sound knowledge of Mining Safety Regulations and best practice.
