Newcrest Mining Limited, a global mining company and Australia’s largest gold producer has recently expanded its footprint into British Columbia as the operator of a Joint Venture company, Newcrest Red Chris Mining Limited. At our Red Chris mine we are recruiting a Instrumentation and Controls Technician apprentice to join the Electrical Maintenance team. This position is for work at the remote Red Chris mine located 80 km south of Dease Lake, BC, on the traditional territory of the Tahltan. The successful applicant will be required to work and stay in camp during their shift rotation. We offer a number of designated flight marshalling points within BC. Responsibilities

Reporting to the Supervisor – Instrumentation Mechanics responsibilities include but are not limited to:
  • Assisting tradesmen with the installation, calibration and maintenance of control and measurement instruments on existing and new plant equipment and processes
  • Assisting tradesmen with the maintenance, preventative maintenance and repair of field instruments such as sensors, smart transmitters, programmable logic controllers, positioners, control valves, radiation devices etc.
  • Assisting tradesmen inspect and test instruments and systems to diagnose faults using test instruments such as multi-meters, simulators, communicators, software etc.
  • Assisting tradesmen calibrate components and instruments according to manufacturer specifications
  • Assisting tradesmen with the installation, inspection and maintenance of the systems and components that are integral to the operations mining activities
  • Performing tasks that involve heaving lifting, cleaning, sweeping, shoveling, recycling, grinding, pounding and scraping
  • Other duties as required

Qualifications and Experience
  • Valid drivers license required (can be an L)
  • Grade 12 diploma or equivalent required, preferably with English 12, Math 11 and Physics 11
  • Must be willing to take an Essential Skills Test
  • Experience in an industrial setting, preferably a mining operation
  • Must be capable of working at heights and in confined spaces
  • Completion of a pre-apprenticeship course or 1 st year apprentice in an electrical trade a distinct asset
  • Ability to perform tasks that require strength and stamina in extreme weather conditions
  • Must be able to work with minimal supervision once familiar with requirements
  • A team player that works well with others
  • Strong oral and written communication skills
