Dam Safety Engineer (Risk Analysis Focused) - Senior Level

The person in this position will work on engineering projects, have a variety of dam safety responsibilities, and assist with risk assessments for power, mining, and industrial clients primarily in the US. Project work also entails risk analysis; structural, geotechnical, and/or hydrology and hydraulics design; site inspections; repair and rehabilitation oversight; quality assurance; and construction support. Sites include hydroelectric facilities and other impoundments, such as tailings storage facilities, coal ash ponds, reservoirs, levees, and canals. The person in this position will help lead our growing dam safety and risk assessment service area, provide mentoring and leadership within the company and industry, and increase awareness of Barr’s brand and services in the dams community. The position requires periodic out-of-town assignments with an estimated 20-40% travel. Minneapolis is the preferred office location for this position, but it is open for others in the US.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in civil engineering
  • 15 years of relevant work experience with dam engineering and risk assessments
  • Professional engineer (PE) certification or ability to obtain certification within one year
  • Broad knowledge and experience with civil engineering and design codes/standards/guidelines/best practices to perform complex dam design and construction projects
  • Experience with established dam safety programs, including FERC Part 12 Dam Safety requirements, DSSMPs, FERC Engineering Guidelines, FERC Security requirements (or familiarity with similar guidelines from USACE, BLM, FEMA, and/or states/provinces)
  • Facilitation experience with PFMAs/FMEAs and qualitative and quantitative risk assessments for dams
  • Experience performing probability and consequence analysis for qualitative risk assessments
  • Demonstrated understanding of consulting profession, including flexibility and willingness to modify personal schedule as required to meet project deadlines and/or client needs
  • Interest in and ability to perform project execution/management, business development, and staff mentoring
  • Proven experience collaborating and maintaining relationships across offices
  • Willingness to travel to support project needs
  • Ability to lift and carry equipment weighing 30 pounds or more
  • Computer skills including word processing and spreadsheet creation
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Legal authorization to work in the United States without the need for sponsorship
  • Acceptable driving record

Preferred Qualifications

  • Graduate degree in civil, geotechnical, or structural engineering with additional coursework or research related to water or dam engineering
  • 20+ years of analysis and design experience, including performing inspections of concrete and earthen dams and/or levees, especially related to dam repair and rehabilitation
  • Prior approval as an Independent Consultant (IC) to complete Part 12 Dam Safety Inspections from the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC)
  • Computer skills with AutoCAD, and/or statistical analysis software
  • Work experience with risk analysis software (@Risk or similar)

NOTE: Some work locations may feature rough terrain typical of construction sites and may also require entering and working within facilities that include limited accessibility, moving machinery, and other conditions typical of industrial facilities. Job assignments may involve work on waste disposal sites and sites requiring cleanup of hazardous materials. An OSHA mandated physical exam may be required. Safety training will be provided. Applicants may be asked to participate in a drug screening program at the request of specific clients.
