General Purpose

Ensures timely and effective compliance with applicable environmental laws and regulations. Provides accurate designs, analysis, and project engineering for surface and underground mine environmental engineering and compliance projects. Assumes lead technical responsibility for ground water and surface water hydrology, waste management, SPCC, construction permit applications, and other areas as assigned. Initiates and maintains positive and effective relations with environmental regulatory agencies and mine site personnel.

Responsibilities

Responsibilities for the Associate Engineer include:
  • Write text for permits, revisions, term renewals, and annual reports. Answer agency review comments. Read and interpret regulations and write permit language that meets regulatory requirements. Write permit language for cost effective compliance based on negotiation and consultation with regulatory agency staff and mine personnel. Oversee and review the work of technical consultants that prepare permit and annual report sections.
  • Oversee monthly WDEQ inspections. Responsible for regulatory compliance with WYPDES and stormwater permits and SPCC plans . Coordinate compliance with design engineer and operations personnel.
  • Support construction projects by obtaining air quality construction permits, water quality construction permits, other construction permits.
  • Prepare surface and ground water hydrology annual report. Provide engineering support to mine dewatering projects.
  • Sediment and holding pond design as required.
  • Characterize wastes, manage waste storage and removal from mine site.
  • Research laws, regulations, guidelines, agency policies for permitting issues.
  • Assist in coordinating and monitoring work of external consultants, contractors and regulators.
Requirements

Requirements of the Associate Engineer include:
  • B.S. degree in Engineering.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and application of mine operations, mine engineering and/or engineering experience.
  • Experience in mine permitting, mine regulatory compliance, environmental project engineering preferred.
  • Strong technical writing, document preparation, and organizational skills are required.
  • Proficiency with MS Office and AutoCAD is required.
  • Strong written and verbal communication, interpersonal skills are essential. Ability to steer team effort toward completion of common goal. Ability to accomplish work through influence. Attention to detail.

In addition, the requirements for the mid-level Engineer position include:
  • Minimum two years of mining, mine engineering, and/or engineering experience at a professional level with progressively increasing responsibility.
Preferences
  • Experience in mining environment strongly preferred
  • Professional engineering certification.
