POSITION OVERVIEW

Under the direction of the Senior Geologist, the Geologist I is responsible to collect and maintain shot, fragmentation, and material stream size distribution data at Mission Complex. In addition, perform geological mapping of pit faces, and blast hole drill cuttings logging, and maintain the database up to date. Assist Senior Geologist and/or Mining Engineers with the completion of special projects.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • Collect photos of shot material and material streams in mills and process the images using split software.
    • Collect and maintain shot records with survey, geologic design, and any other pertinent information.
    • Establish baseline fragmentation versus energy factor in various rock types.
    • Prepare bench maps detailing fragmentation performance.
    • Maintain spreadsheets for Mill, Blasting, and Engineering departments with fragmentation data and energy factor values.
  • Assist Geologist/Mining Engineers
    • Identify Blast hole rock types from field blast hole cuttings logging, and x-ray chemistry for entry into the dispatch database.
    • Provide blasting crew with geologic sketch map.
    • Be responsible for geologic mapping in a sector of final high wall.
    • Maintain the geologic mapping of pit faces and blast hole logging in MineSight up to date.
  • Assist Surveyor
    • Pick up/deliver samples from the pit to the assay Lab.
    • Lay out pattern for drills
    • Stake out shots
  • Maintain, update, and validate the Mission blast hole database to ensure availability of data as required.
  • Assist in the geological and assay data analysis and perform basic interpretation on the rock types, ore grade, and structural data.
  • Help maintain the blast hole rock model up to date through the continuous data entry of geologic mapping and assay data.
  • Other special projects assigned by the Mine Engineering Department.
  • Participate in the continuous improvement of practices and procedures in the Engineering Department.
  • Fill in for Geologist II as needed.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES
  • Must have excellent computer skills with MS Windows, MS Word, MS Excel, and MS Outlook and MineSight knowledge preferred.
  • Must be self-motivated, able to manage time effectively and set priorities.
  • Requires the ability to manage multiple tasks.
  • Requires the ability to work in extreme conditions, drive a company vehicle, walk over rough terrain and handle physical exertion.
  • Mining background preferred.

REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
  • Bachelor's degree in Geology or a related field.
  • Experience or knowledge of skarn deposits and/or porphyry copper systems.
