The person in this position will work on geotechnical and geostructural engineering projects, acting as an internal consultant and working closely with the business systems support team to assist stakeholders across the company. They will work on technical projects in support of Barr’s business systems, work with users to define system needs, and lead the implementation of improvement efforts. Responsibilities will include installing and maintaining instruments, programming data loggers, and configuring telemetry and networks as well as working with engineering staff members to process, manage, interpret, analyze, and visualize this data. This person will also provide technology support and leadership for multiple, concurrent internal projects to advance the company’s analytics and technological capabilities and will recommend and carry out policies for effective data and security management.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in geotechnical engineering or related field
  • 10 years of related work experience
  • A flexible working style and willingness to adjust personal schedule to meet project needs
  • Willingness and ability to travel to support project needs
  • Strong interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills
  • Knowledge of common engineering programming languages, such as C++, Visual Basic, Fortran, Python, CRBasic, etc.
  • Advanced query writing, structured query language (SQL), and data visualization skills
  • Experience working on mining and/or dam projects
  • Experience with Matlab and SQL
  • Willingness and ability to work cooperatively with project team members in an environment that encourages self-initiative
  • Legal authorization to work in the United States without the need for sponsorship
  • Acceptable driving record


Preferred Qualifications

  • PhD in geotechnical engineering or related field
  • 15+ years of geotechnical design experience
  • Solid background in probability and statistics for engineering
  • Desire to work with a team of geotechnical engineers in data analytics and mentor less experienced staff
  • Demonstrated business development and client relationship-building skills


NOTE: Applicants must be able to work in locations that feature rough terrain typical of construction sites and must be able to enter and work within facilities that include limited accessibility, moving machinery, and other conditions typical of industrial facilities. Position will occasionally require lifting or moving field testing equipment. Safety training will be provided prior to being given field work assignments. Applicants will be asked to participate in a drug screening program at the request of clients.
