Job Overview and Responsibilities:

Lead and manage the Operations Department at the site focusing on safety, reliably, and efficiently producing and shipping quality products in a timely manner

Instill operating discipline and the accountability and adherence to all procedures.

Enforce Solvay Life Savings Rules and all other site safety rules and procedures within the operations departments, other plant personnel, as well as contractors that are working onsite. Lead by example.

Manage and optimize unit operating costs, implement cost reduction measures (both fixed and variable), and increase the efficiency and overall output of the workforce

Lead, coach, and develop operations personnel and manage personnel matters.

Conduct or direct the completion of investigations of incidents or near misses, as appropriate, and insure corrective actions are identified, assigned, and completed.

Support the plant's quality management systems and its compliance with pertinent quality standards.

Conduct daily informal inspections on the shop floor and provide feedback to supervision on observations and corrective actions.

Education and Experience:

Bachelor of Science in Chemical Engineering or similar Engineering discipline.

7+ years working in a chemical process production plant with three or more years of operational (production) supervisory or line management experience preferably in a union environment.

Skills:

Excellent leadership, communication, and organizational skills

Ability to manage, motivate, coach, and develop shop floor and supervisory personnel

Ability to set aggressive objectives, deliver results, and facilitate cooperation between departments.

Understanding of OHSA safety programs, process safety fundamentals, and basic environmental regulations

Ability to manage in a union environment

Change management and team building skills.

Familiarity with batch and continuous chemical processing a plus

Knowledge of 6 Sigma, Lean Manufacturing concepts, and/or SAP is a plus, but not required.

Ability to interface with the appropriate external personnel and serve as a backup to the Plant Manager in both the internal and external affairs.
