Mount Isa Mines are currently seeking a Project / Lead Mine Geologist to work in the Technical Services Department at their Underground Copper Mine - a sublevel open stoping focused operation that is also starting a sublevel cave in heavily leached and oxidised ground later this year.

Working in the Mine Geology team, you will be an experienced underground geologist looking for the next step; ready to mentor, coach, innovate and motivate! The team's key functions include logging diamond core from three rigs, underground mapping and sampling behind 10 jumbos, structural model updates, providing geological input into stope and development designs, grade control tracking, production database management, and orebody/stope reconciliation.

Reporting to the Senior Mine Geologist, you will assist them plan and manage the activities of the seven geologists in the team, coordinate effective geological data gathering, validation and storage, whilst ensuring relevant geological information is clearly communicated to stakeholders. Your prior experience will allow you to improve our processes, leveraging technology to increase efficiencies whilst passing on your knowledge to the rest of the team.

Some specific accountabilities include:

  • Instilling a robust safety culture within the Mine Geology team, enforcing site safety expectations.
  • Assisting the Senior Mine Geologist to coach/mentor best practice mine geology techniques to develop expertise, depth and robust succession plans within the team.
  • Logging drill core within 28 days, and completing all underground drive mapping/structural updates with enough lead time to influence upcoming stope designs.
  • Reviewing and approving mine designs from a geological perspective.
  • Identifying risks (e.g. reactive ground) and opportunities (scavenger stopes) for the operation as a whole, and for the team's deliverables.
  • Establishing/enhancing resource -> mine -> mill reconciliation processes for our new sublevel cave mine.
  • Liaising with the Concentrator Metallurgy team regarding forecasts of copper grade and other metallurgical parameters.
  • Building strong working relationships and clear lines of communication with a number of multidisciplinary departments; including technical and operational personnel.
The ideal Project / Lead Mine Geologist will have:
  • Tertiary qualifications in Geoscience with a strong background in mine geology.
  • Experience in underground metalliferous mining (4+ years preferred), ideally with exposure to base metals.
  • A proactive approach to team safety , with a demonstrated history of safety leadership.
  • A demonstrated ability to set achievable goals, effectively delegate and mentor is critical.
  • The capability to identify and deliver continuous improvement initiatives, driving them through to completion.
  • The desire to innovate and use technology to improve current ways of working.
  • An advanced understanding of geological interpretation, 3D modelling techniques, block modelling, QAQC protocols, grade control systems and reconciliation would be highly regarded.

We work using Acquire, Leapfrog and Deswik; prior experience will let you hit the ground running.

This is a permanent full-time residential position based in Mount Isa, working either a 5/2, 4/3 roster or a 5/2 roster with additional leave entitlements. The annual salary for this role can range from $125,000 - $150,000 dependent upon the depth of experience and skillset the successful candidate will bring to the position. Glencore also offers exclusive benefits, including a range of relocation benefits and 13% superannuation.
