What You'll Do

Reporting to the VP of Marketing and Bulk Products, you will be the expert in managing the Dyno Nobel Americas Explosives R&D support operations (Lehi Laboratory facility, Pilot Plant and Test Site), services, functions, facilities and staff. You will be responsible for the supervising and coordinating efforts in all areas to support research and production activities in accordance with business objectives, while directing and facilitating various scientific projects/experiments driving product and process development strategies. Other duties will include:
  • Ensure compliance with applicable Company HSE Performance Standards, as well as applicable acts and regulations
  • Supply plants, customers and project team leaders with the necessary information to provide customers with explosives products safely, efficiently and in a timely manner
  • Supervise safety management and loss prevention plans for Lehi R&D, including general oversight and governance of the R&D safety program and Zero Harm Action Plan
  • Maintain current SOPs, JSAs, task instructions and related procedures and policies for Lehi R&D operations
  • Monitor and execute required municipal, regulatory or other necessary certifications/permits for Lehi R&D operations
  • Appraise operational activities according to plan and budget strategies and objectives, and monitor and evaluate performance
  • Plan, lead, and manage overall administration of laboratory, pilot plant and test site staff, functions and services
  • Assess and control the environmental impact of Lehi R&D operations, primarily waste management and environmental monitoring
  • Administer the general R&D support workflow (cradle to grave) for projects, M&T work requests and administrative business support actions
  • Ensure operational spending is within agreed budgets
  • Identify, implement and monitor continuous improvement initiatives for Lehi R&D operations according to corporate strategies for Business Excellence (BEx)

What We're Looking For:
  • B.S degree in Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Mining Engineering, or closely related discipline required. Advanced degree preferred.
  • Minimum five years working experience with progressively increasing responsibility in industrial site management, scientific research (ideally associated with the energetic materials industry) or equivalent advanced education and/or industrial experience. Previous supervisory experience preferred.
  • Knowledge and understanding of chemical hazards.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of current and future regulatory requirements
  • Experience in a chemical industry processing, production or research environment
  • Ability to understand and plan for scale-up to production processes
  • Well versed in the procurement, handling, storage, treatment, inventory control and disposition of hazardous materials
  • Experience planning, conducting, interpreting, and communicating the results of complex scientific experiments
  • Extensive knowledge and experience with emulsion explosives formulations, testing and experimentation preferred
  • Excellent understanding of water based explosives technology and raw materials preferred
  • Knowledge of the nature of wastes generated in explosive R&D operations and the means available for handling them preferred
  • Positive attitude, friendly demeanor, and a team player
