This position will be responsible for strategic development and leadership of the organization's safety and health programs and initiatives for the West Region. The role will direct and coordinate SH activities to ensure alignment with Lehigh Hanson and Heidelberg Cement SH directives and programs and compliance with, safety and health laws and regulations.  The position will provide leadership and guidance to the Safety and Health Managers in strong and effective collaboration with operational leaders and the Lehigh Hanson Corporate SH team.

  • Leads the development, implementation, and continuous improvement of the Region's Safety & Health function while aligning with corporate objectives
  • Drives established Corporate and Regional initiatives and safety & health action plans.
  • Continuously identifies and implements improvement opportunities within the Region's safety and health performance.
  • Trains, coaches and mentors operations leaders and safety professionals.
  • Develops and maintains the Region's safety performance standards, specifications, and programs, including training.
  • Stays apprised of emerging SH issues including legislative, regulatory, etc., and communicates accordingly with Corporate and business line managers; communications will often include recommendations of actions the Company should take as a result of these emerging issues.
  • Coordinates and assists in the response and correction of significant safety events.
  • Maintains and monitors the Company's S&H Information Management database and other department systems.
  • Ensures accurate and timely reporting of leading and lagging performance indices.
  • Monitors and regularly communicates Region safety performance to senior management.
  • Coordinates the Region's industrial hygiene program, and ensures completion of identified corrective and preventative actions.
  • Provides oversight for the management of Workers Comp, General and Auto Liability for the region.
  • Requirement to travel within the Region and at times nationally.
  • Assures compliance of all plant operations with company policy and federal, state, and local regulations.
  • Any other responsibilities as assigned.
The incumbent must understand and comply with Company compliance policies, including the Code of Business Conduct (including NAM supplements), the anti-corruption policy and the Antitrust Compliance Policy, and is required to participate in compliance training in such policies and provide disclosures and compliance certifications from time to time. The incumbent is expected to require compliance with such policies by subordinates, monitor their activities for compliance and disclose incidents of non-compliance as provided by such policies.
This position will be based in San Ramon
  • Bachelor's degree in Safety related discipline or other related degree.  Advanced degree preferred.
  • Certified Safety Professional (CSP), Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH) or demonstrated work towards professional certification preferred.
  • Minimum of 7 years' experience in safety in a heavy manufacturing industry; cement/mining industry preferred.
  • Strong and effective experience in developing, implementing and managing SH programs across multiple sites and implementing and managing HeidelbergCement and NAM Safety and Health initiatives.
  • Solid understanding of regulations in both the US and California
  • Experience in management systems.
  • Experience and expertise in SH audit program management and auditing as a Lead Auditor.
  • Strong management, communication, technical writing and influencing skills at all levels from senior leadership to plant level employees.
  • Experience and ability to coach and teach both safety and operations personnel.
