AREA:                        HEALTH AND SAFETY


Northshore Mining Company, a subsidiary of Cleveland-Cliffs Inc., is a taconite mining and processing facility located in Northern Minnesota. The mining facility is located in Babbitt, MN, and the processing plant is located in Silver Bay, MN, on the north shore of Lake Superior.

We have an immediate opening for a Section Manager, Health and Safety.  This position is located in Silver Bay, MN.  Travel between the Silver Bay Plant and the Babbitt Mine Site, other Cliffs mine sites, and other associated business travel will be required.


Actively work with operating, maintenance, and staff departments to develop, promote, and maintain safety and industrial hygiene programs at the Silver Bay Plant and Babbitt Mine Site with a focus on reducing accidents, injuries/incidents, property damage, MSHA citations and fires. The successful candidate will also be responsible to promote environmental compliance.

To provide guidance and assistance in development and maintenance of the safety and loss control system by developing safety and loss control performance standards, designing and conducting education and training activities, and conducting, documenting and reporting compliance measurement activities.


  • Develop, coordinate and administer all safe production activities for the plant and mine. Primary responsibilities for assuring all safe production standards are met.
  • Advise facility management on systems and methods that prevent accidents.
  • Advise facility management on safety policies and procedures.
  • Advise facility management on compliance with all applicable Federal, State and Company Safety and Health rules and regulations.
  • Identify and appraise accident and loss-producing conditions and practices.
  • Work closely with employees of all levels to maintain a safe and healthy work environment.
  • Assist in structuring and managing NSM's health and safety initiatives and processes to ensure compliance with regulatory requirements, corporate policies, and standards, which will reduce injuries and illnesses.
  • Frequently assess proactive and compliance initiatives and provide specific recommendations to the Area Manager Safety and Loss Control, to improve the effectiveness of operations and maintenance staff in managing safety.
  • Serve as a resource to and support the environmental coordinators.
  • Assist in the facilitation of the site industrial hygiene program.
  • Oversee the site fire detection systems/equipment and health and safety supplies.
  • Assist with the coordination of site security.
  • Accompany MSHA inspectors when required.
  • Assist in the site MSHA conference and litigation management program.
  • Lead efforts to identify and eliminate repeat MSHA citations.
  • Be a resource for safety meetings and safety training, and provide technical assistance to employees on safety related issues.
  • Proactively conduct area tours with focus on hazard identification and MSHA citation mitigation.
  • Participate in accident investigations with particular attention given to the identification of root causes and effective corrective actions.
  • Conduct MSHA new miner and other regulatory training as needed.
  • Ensure that a personal development plan is in place and followed to remain knowledgeable in best practices and current regulations.
  • Maintain all required documentation.
  • Other duties as assigned.


  • Education: B.S. in Safety Engineering or equivalent.
  • Experience: 5-7 years in engineering in safety field and must have knowledge of MSHA, OSHA, and State Regulations.
  • Experience working in an industrial environment is preferred.
  • Organizational Skills - must have the ability to plan and coordinate multiple work tasks with a variety of employees, departments and vendors with regular interruptions.Must be able to set goals and develop strategies and schedules to accomplish goals.
  • People Skills - must have excellent interpersonaD9l skills and the ability to motivate, empower, and delegate.Must be willing to promote Northshore team concepts and company policies fairly and consistently.Must be skilled in team solving techniques.
  • Computer Skills -must be proficient with personal computers (Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint, Access) and have the ability to learn and be proficient with other various Company information systems.
  • Communication Skills - must have excellent communication skills and be able to interact and communicate with all levels of the organization.Must have strong written and verbal communication skills.Must be willing to challenge the status quo, identify and pursue new ideas and opportunities to improve production, safety, add value, and/or solve problems.Must be able to perform public speaking duties.
