Venetia Mine is a Tier 1 asset in the Anglo American portfolio with a strategic and commercial imperative to achieve the business objectives. The Venetia Underground Project (VUP) is a key replacement project to the Venetia Open Pit (VOP). VUP is a complexed underground mechanised development, shaft and mine construction project to deliver an operational Sub Level Cave mine operation. Experienced and effective management and control of the project works and mining operations through major contractors (EPC, Mining Contractor) and owner functions is essential for Safe, timely and effective delivery of the project.


Ensure the Safe, Efficient and Cost efficient execution of the mine and project plan through the contribution to and delivery of mining engineering solutions and implementation of support systems, standards and processes. Establish systems and processes for effective work planning, execution control, and performance standards - establish high performance operating culture Ensure mine plans and schedules provide input to support safe and efficient mining operations. Challenge and support Mining Planning and Technical design processes in ensuring mine plans, technical functions and schedules provide inputs to support safe and efficient mining operations.

Formal qualifications:

  • Grade 12/Std 10/N3 or relevant NQF Level 4 qualification
  • Bachelor's Degree in Mining or related qualification
  • Expertise must have been obtained from a formal qualification in Mining Engineering or other relevant discipline.
  • Demonstrated application of academic qualifications through experience working in the field.

Role-specific knowledge:
  • Extensive (8-10 years) mine site based operational, technical and mine planning experience that demonstrates successful application of underground mining engineering fundamentals in a mechanized mining environment.
  • Considered an experienced technical and operational specialist in underground mine planning.
  • Track record of leading ideas generation; translating these into practical initiatives to be implemented and demonstration of successful execution and delivery of underground mine planning strategies for individual mine operations.
  • Expertise in practical underground mine design.
    • Demonstrated ability to consider short, medium- and long-term consequences of proposed changes to processes.
    • Demonstrated success in the implementation of process improvements across multiple work streams in a mining operation.

  • Safety:
    Provides a consistent outstanding role model in relation to safety practices with a deep understanding of the importance of safety.

Any other requirements to perform the work effectively?
  • Required: ability to communicate in English (advanced level for verbal and written).
  • Desirable: additional languages are advantageous
  • Work on site at Mine operations will be required. This may involve activities of a physical nature in a typical mine environment (for example noise, vibration, heat, small spaces, reduced visibility).
  • Ability to balance strategic thought with delivery of tangible business outcomes.
  • Timely, pragmatic and effective decision-making drawing on limited inputs and sometimes incomplete information.
