PURPOSE

Ensure that safe and optimised mine designs, budgets, mining technical inputs and short-medium range forecasts are planned, reviewed and risks controlled to support efficient mine operations and execution compliant with the plan. Establish technical and planning systems, standards and processes to support delivery of best practice mechanised mining in South Africa, with use of supporting new mine technologies and modern best in industry practices. Challenge and support mining operations teams in ensuring operational execution meets design standards and within quality standards and tolerances set by mining technical standards. Establish a technical and operating working framework aligned to AAOM supporting a high performance mining culture and disciplined approach to execution, compliant to plan.

KNOWLEDGE

Formal qualifications:
  • Required: Expertise must have been obtained from a formal qualification in Mine Engineering. Specifically:
  • Minimum requirement: Bachelor Engineering Mining Degree from Tier 1 Mining University.
  • Desirable: Attained statutory Mining Management qualification, worked in leadership role with statutory accountability.
  • Extensive (>15 years) mining engineering site based operational, technical and management experience that demonstrates successful application of underground mining engineering fundamentals, Safety, Technical Leadership and Operational mining systems.
  • Risk and Crisis management training and practical experience.

Role-specific knowledge:

Extensive Underground mechanised mining Technical experience across multiple Mining Engineering disciplines - Ventilation, Mine Planning, Operations Engineering, UG mechanised survey systems, UG Geotechnical (experience with operational Geology and resource
  • geology an advantage). Technical management and leadership experience in efficient, productive and modern mass mining mechanised metalliferous and precious metal mining operations and mining projects in development. (Caving experience preferred)
  • Proven experience with working in underground mining technical teams as a Mining Engineer, providing supervision and leadership to integrated and multidiscipline underground technical teams in a complexed mine environment.
  • A demonstrated thought leader and considered a respected and experienced technical leader in the understanding of how to design and technically manage a successful modern, safe & productive underground mechanised mining systems in development and production.
  • Demonstrated experience (directly or in-directly) in a cross functional leadership role requiring engagement with Mining Operational leadership or major projects.
  • Proven ability of successfully leading technical Systems establishment (technical, operations, maintenance, cost), performance improvement and management in UG mechanised mines. Safety Leadership, site planning and budgeting processes, risk control and management, emergency planning and management.

Safety:

Provides outstanding Safety leadership and acts as a role model in relation to leading safe mine practices through Safety by Design and systems development. Demonstrated and extended mine site based work history in mining technical roles, leading and supporting Safety initiatives

Any other requirements to perform the work effectively?
  • Required: ability to communicate in English (verbal and written).
  • Required: Regular domestic, occasional regional and international travel will be required.
  • Required: Work on site at Mine operations will be required. This may involve activities of a physical nature in a typical mine environment (for example noise, vibration, heat, small spaces, reduced visibility).
  • Ability to balance strategic thought with delivery of tangible business outcomes.
  • Timely, pragmatic and effective decision-making drawing on limited inputs and sometimes incomplete information.
  • Track record of success liaising and dealing at senior levels with suppliers, JV Partners, regulatory bodies, community stakeholders, research institutions and industry associations
  • Work effectively as a member of a geographically dispersed and multi-disciplined technical team.
