VPGM of Illinois , is responsible for partnering across the division with other operational executives to develop the division-wide strategy and the corresponding Illinois operations execution strategy. Key areas of responsibility include sales, production, P&L, quality control and business planning. The VPGM of Illinois will be expected to drive a consistent approach and continuous improvement to quality, safety, service and logistics; create capital plans and manage initiative prioritization for Illinois in support of the Central Division operations strategy. VPGM of Illinois works within a team-based organization supported by finance, human resources, community and governmental relations, legal, marketing, procurement, logistics, safety, health and environmental, information technology and engineering.

Education, Experience, Skills Require

Bachelor’s degree required. MBA degree highly desired or an equivalent combination of training and work experience

  • Minimum of 10 years of progressively responsible work experience in preferably both sales and operations, but at least one discipline is required, which includes supervising other professional level employees. Lead and manage senior management to maximize the growth and development of team as well as division performance.
  • Prior work experience in aggregates, ready mix, and/or asphalt mining operations, including an understanding of their production processes is preferred.
  • At least 5 years recent experience in general management with P&L responsibility.
  • Experience in change management including developing and managing company culture.
  • Must be capable of translating objectives and needs into deliverable strategy to achieve business goals and create a competitive advantage within large competitive markets.
  • Proven experience working with customers in key areas, including the business markets, lifecycle management, and regulatory/industry compliance.
  • Success delivering business objectives through effective cross-functional and regional relationship building
  • Participate in creation of overall Illinois market optimization strategy and develop execution plans which includes operations, quality, sales and logistics, Execute the strategy within the group to stimulate continuous improvement across Illinois.
  • Understanding of construction materials industry across sales and operations
  • Financial skills – budgeting and financial statements; Development and implementation of highly effective business plan;
  • Ability to trend performance of various operating units versus key business goals and take effective action when results are below these goals;
  • Ability to effectively establish and maintain highly effective working relationships with all people in the organization;
  • Unrelenting commitment to the safety of our people. Understanding of safety, health and environmental rules and regulations with OSHA and MSHA.

  • Knowledge of construction material production methods, products and technology is highly desirable; Understanding of mining operations and processes in a construction materials business,

Essential Functions

  • Achieve goals for revenue, cost, sales quality, customer relations, production, human resources, management and results of the region’s SHE activities, and investment strategies;
  • Develop and maintain a proactive management team that focuses on achieving or exceeding business goals and objectives;
  • Short and long-range business planning to formulate strategies that exceed the market and establish the company as a market leader;
  • Bring together sales, operations, quality services and other staff functions to form a collaborative organization complementing the goals and objectives of the Central division. Proactively promote the goals of Illinois, division and company to local, state and national government agencies and professional and trade associations;
  • Develop and implement annual business unit plans. Plan, develop and implement strategies, policies and procedures that align with the strategic and business plans of the business unit as well as the Division. Assist other senior management in developing short and long term goals and objectives and function as a business partner to the Division President and other senior staff members;
  • Compliance with various rules, regulations, and company’s policies to include the Code of Business Conduct;
  • Implement sales-forecasting and operations-planning programs to ensure the achievement of revenue goals. Sales planning includes the development of pricing policies, terms, and conditions of sales, analysis of competitive products and coordination between sales and operations to maximize profitability;

  • Build and maintain highly effective customer relationships with key decision-makers in the organization;
  • Use business plans and strategies to appraise operating results in terms of profitability and performance against budget and other matters bearing on the fiscal soundness and operating effectiveness of the organization;
  • Develop operating goals and standards to meet operating, health & safety and environmental requirements to provide the best possible employee and community environment.
  • Able to develop workable cost control programs to reduce operating costs consistent with business conditions without sacrificing human capital;
  • Manage and direct operations consistent with company policies and practices;
  • Proactively promote the goals of the region and company to local and state government agencies and professional and trade associations;
  • Establish performance goals and objectives for the area and various functions and measure results with accountability with recognition for managers and workgroups;
  • Maintain a positive proactive work environment that fosters a high level of employee satisfaction with open communication;
  • Identification of new business opportunities in the area; and
  • Drive employee engagement; lead and grow a team to define and deliver value for Vulcan Materials and customers through effective prioritization of business objectives.

  • Must be able to present complex information in a clear and concise manner
Other Requirements

  • Local and regional travel by automobile and periodic need to travel by airline
  • Must have the ability to use computerized equipment and technology
  • Proficient in Windows applications and Microsoft Office programs such as MS Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint.
  • Proficiency in Functional areas of Oracle, the company’s Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) software.
  • Quickly learns and achieves proficiency in new software applications as needed.
  • Ability to travel 50% or more between with Illinois and other Vulcan Material locations throughout US
  • Ability to lead a team effectively and constructively through the business cycle. By nature, that can include intense, deadline-oriented situations with complex, technical information and decision making
