About the Role

Under general supervision and reporting to Superintendent Hydromet and Assay, the Lab Supervisor is responsible but not limited to supervise all activities within the Assay lab, monitor and maintain QA/QC standards and other related duties.

  • The Lab Supervisor will supervise all activities within the Assay Lab and Assay Sample Prep area, including staff training and scheduling.
  • Ensure that each person has sufficient information, resources, and materials to perform their job safely.
  • Directly responsible for ensuring all safety equipment is in place on a daily basis.
  • Monitor and maintain QA/QC standards including external QC program. Responsible for quality of all data released by the department.
  • Maintain present and develop new Standard Operating Procedures as required including all safety requirements.
  • Ensure analytical instruments are maintained and are in proper operating condition. Maintain all service contracts with the instrument vendors and setup site visits with Service Engineers. Develop new procedures when necessary with the help of the instrument vendors if needed. Make recommendations on instrument upgrades.
  • Work with LIMS contractor to provider updates to LIMS as needed.
  • Enter maintenance work requests and follow through with the various departments.
  • Analyze results for trends and anomalies. Communicate any issues with the Mill and Mine departments as necessary,
  • Schedule workflow through the department so that assays are returned in a timely fashion, based on priority.
  • Ensure required consumables/supplies are available and reorder when necessary.

  • A degree in chemistry or chemistry related field
  • 1-3 years of previous supervisory experience

Key Competencies / Skills
  • Valid U.S Driver's License.
  • Able to speak, comprehend, read, and write English.
  • Proficient in using various types of computer software (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, SAP, etc.)
  • Demonstrated experience and knowledge in analytical chemistry including but not limited to Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy (AAS), XRF/Panalytical Axios, Inductively Coupled Plasma Spectrometer (ICP), MPS Sample Preparation systems, titration, sample prep, etc. is required.
  • Previous experience using laboratory instruments and the ability to operate and trouble-shoot them.
  • Strong leadership skills and experience in the supervising of small technical teams (12 technicians).
  • Knowledge of good laboratory management, and compliance practices.
  • Must be able to read, understand and follow work instructions in a safe, accurate, and timely manner.
  • Ability to work well with others and independently.
  • Proven time management skills and a strong attention to detail.
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, sit, demonstrate manual dexterity, climb stairs, and ladders, work on elevated platforms, talk, hear and see.
  • Occasionally required to lift moderately heavy objects (up to 50-70 pounds) during course of workday.

  • Personal protective equipment is required when performing work in a mine, outdoor, or manufacturing plant environment, including hard hat, hearing protection, safety glasses, safety footwear, and as needed, respirator, rubber steel-toe boots, protective clothing, gloves and any other protective equipment required.
  • Work is in a mine or manufacturing plant setting, which may include exposure to extremes in temperature and humidity moving mechanical parts, risk of electrical shock, toxic chemicals, explosives, fumes, and airborne particles.
