Located approximately 26 miles from the City of Fairbanks, Fort Knox is a centre of excellence for the Company as one of the few cold weather heap leach facilities in the world. In 2016, the site poured its seven millionth ounce of gold, 20 years into its mine life. The initial Gilmore Expansion Project is expected to extend mine life to 2030.

Job Description

Supervise and coordinate engineering and mine support activities in an efficient manner consistent with health, safety, and environmental standards to achieve production and operation cost goals. Provide overall advice and technical perspective to department and site management. Serve as a technical mentor to personnel who have diverse technical backgrounds

Job Responsibilities

• Review daily operating plans with the Mine Superintendent, and General Mine Foreman to establish production priorities. Coordinate engineering assignments with respect to those priorities, and assign workloads to the engineering staff to ensure sufficient support for mine operations.
• Coordinate ore control, production reporting, project engineering, mine modeling, mine design, and mine planning activities in coordination with overall mine plans and production schedules.
• Support day-to-day operational mine support responsibilities, including mine geology, surveying, and mine dewatering.
• Develop/review quarterly, annual, and life-of-mine budgets for all mines within the operational unit.
• Support Mine Supervisors, General Mine Foreman, and Mine Superintendent.
• Update the Operations Manager and the Technical Services Manager with daily, weekly, monthly, and budget reports.
• Supervise, schedule, train, and evaluate mine engineers and surveyors.
• Assist in screening and staffing the Engineering Department.
• Maintain the overall integrity and accuracy of the work generated by department staff.
• Supervise and analyze ore control techniques to optimize ore recovery.
• Make observations and recommendations on how Mine Operations should perform safer and/or more efficiently.
• Maintain accurate records and files.
• Must be production orientated.
• Consistent exercise of discretion and judgment in job performance.
• Responsible for conducting performance evaluations, recommending promotions, and carrying out corrective actions as needed.
• Review documentation of accidents, injuries and equipment damage, and recommend prevention strategies as necessary.
• Assist in the development of contract documents. Supervise contractors and engineers assigned to the contract. Coordinate work of contractors and consultants as required.
• Manage mine planning in a manner that supports the pit dewatering program and slope stability to maintain safety and production.
• Supervise the development and or application of computer programs which allow the engineering section to operate more efficiently.
• Manage tailings dam construction to ensure uninterrupted milling.
• Punctuality and regular attendance is required.
• Meet or exceed established performance expectations set by management.
• Compliance with all company policies and procedures, including, but not limited to safety, confidentiality, and environmental policies.
• Possession of a valid driver's license issued by the state.
• Work safely in all areas and identify potential safety hazards and work with management to correct them.
• Work without significant risk of harm to self and others.
• Perform other duties as required.

Education and Experience

• Employee must have sufficient education to read and write instructions, perform simple mathematical calculations, and keep records.
• Bachelor of Science in mine engineering is required.
• Ten years of mine engineering experience.
• Have a strong commitment to safe working practices.
• Knowledge of engineering techniques as they apply to ore body evaluation and mine operations.
• A thorough understanding of mining and the integration of the mining, milling, and maintenance functions.
• A thorough understanding of contract administration.
• A thorough understanding of reserve estimation.
• Demonstrated skills in management and economics including personnel relations and budget analysis.
• Good working knowledge and skills with a P.C. utilizing work processing and spreadsheet programs.
• Experience in supervising personnel in varying and unrelated fields.
• Strong verbal, written, analytical and persuasive skills and the ability to interact effectively with all levels of employees and management.

• Must be a self-starter with the ability to work independently, with others in a team environment, and also as a member of the management team.
• Must be available for shift work, holidays, and weekends.
