Bald Mountain is an open-pit mine with a large estimated mineral resource base that was acquired by Kinross in January 2016. The mine is located in Nevada, one of the best mining jurisdictions in the world, along the southern extension of the prolific Carlin trend. The Bald Mountain Vantage Complex Project has commenced production, and the first gold bar was poured in June 2019.

Job Description

To Validate or improve the understanding of geology at the Bald Mountain Mine

This position contributes to the group by collecting data and incorporating it into computer models, generating official reports, and identifying trends and business improvement opportunities. This is reliant on field observation paired with communication to Technical Services and Mine Operations departments

Key Accountabilities/Responsibilities

  • Oversee Ore Control operations - monitor mining practices and ore loss/dilution; continually evaluate ore geometry and ore types for cut-off grades, blend and mine-ability and account for blast movement; design, perform, and evaluate sample/assay quality control
  • Mandatory daily duties: load assays into database, ore/waste cuts ("releases"), export releases to dispatch, pit tour, digface monitoring, block models estimation and flagging, update and distribute daily production map, ensure truck is clean, fuelled and operating safely
  • Conduct geological and geotechnical field mapping - routinely collect blasthole and highwall mapping data and enter into the appropriate databases and model, plan and manage objectives so that all pit areas are mapped
  • Extra sampling or resampling of special interest areas including blast holes, shot muck piles, grab samples as needed
  • Quarterly Environmental sampling
  • Maintain a perspective of application with regard to geologic knowledge and data - collect meaningful data with the intent of using it
  • Provide geologic insight to Geotech, mine ops and blasting groups especially during production meetings
  • Work concurrently on both special projects and routine tasks
  • Daily safety inspections of work area as per MSHA requirements
  • Demonstrate and sustain safe work practices

Qualifications and Skill Requirements

  • Zero to four years of mining experience
  • Field work experience
  • Mining software experience (Vulcan, ArcGIS, Excel, or others)
  • Project leadership or independent research
  • Minimum Bachelor's degree in Geology preferred, Geological Engineering considered
  • Previous mining experience preferred
  • Open pit field work experience
  • Teaching, training, TA or similar experience
  • Ability to work as part of a team
  • Strong understanding of geology concepts and field methods
  • MS Office Suite skills
  • Keen safety awareness
  • Ability to carry 25 lbs of gear over uneven ground for an extended period of time
  • Ability to work in both a field and office setting
