In 2016, the site poured its seven millionth ounce of gold, 20 years into its mine life. The initial Gilmore Expansion Project is expected to extend mine life to 2030.

Job Description

The Senior Exploration Geologist role assists the Chief Geologist and Exploration Manager, in planning and executing exploration projects at all stages of development. The Senior Exploration Geologist is primarily engaged in mineral resource definition drilling, as well as early-stage and generative exploration. The Senior Exploration Geologist must routinely document, evaluate, and frame exploration results for management. The Senior Exploration Geologist helps develop the team, consisting of junior staff and contract geologists. Undertake field examinations of exploration projects while continuously aligning daily functions to reflect Kinross' values.

Job Responsibilities

  • Provide technical and logistical supervision of exploration activities in the field and office
  • Advise on and carry out technical functions
  • Integrate and interpret geologic mapping, geophysical, geochemical, trenching, and drilling data
  • Construct 3D Geologic Models, and assist in compiling and calculating mineral resources
  • Enforce rigorous QA/QC standards for all aspects of technical projects
  • Author routine and statutory technical reports
  • Assist in assessing and maintaining Kinross' Mineral Estate in Alaska
  • Assist in preparing budget requests, scopes of work, and managing contractors
  • Possesses good communication and interpersonal skills and the ability to lead project teams
  • Help develop other department personnel to perform duties listed above


Education and Experience

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Geology or equivalent required. A Masters with economic geology emphasis is preferred
  • A minimum of 7 years of experience as a mine or exploration geologist
  • Knowledge of exploration techniques as they apply to mineral deposit discovery and evaluation
  • Advanced knowledge of mineral deposits and the integration of exploration methods in the discovery and mineral deposit evaluation process. Emphasize to and instruct staff to recognize favorable geologic settings (geology, geochemistry, alteration, and geophysics)
  • Experience with MapInfo or ArcGIS desktop mapping software is preferred
  • Familiarity with Leapfrog Geo, Vulcan, or MineSight 3D preferred
  • Proficiency with acQuire database is desired
  • Experience with excel and access database is desired
  • Strong verbal, written, analytical and persuasive skills
  • Ability to work independently
