Round Mountain is an open-pit mine located in Nevada, one of the best mining jurisdictions in the world. The mine uses conventional open-pit mining methods and processes ore by mill and heap leach. The Round Mountain Phase W Project is now in production, with first gold poured in May 2019.

Job Description

Incumbent will work as part of a team to provide complete environmental services for a gold mining operation and ancillary facilities. Under the direction of the Environmental Superintendent or the Environmental Manager, will ensure that company activities are conducted in accordance with company requirements and in compliance with local, state and federal environmental regulations and licenses. Will conduct all activities in a safe manner and align performance and daily functions to reflect Kinross' values.

Job Responsibilities

  • Conduct all activities safely, in accordance with RMGC safety rules and policies, to prevent harm to self and others.
  • Ensure RMGC compliance with the requirements of environmental permits, licenses, and regulations, focusing on monitoring, record-keeping and reporting requirements.
  • Effectively communicate with site personnel regarding regulatory obligations.
  • Complete permitting activities in a timely manner by soliciting and gathering necessary information from affected operational departments, and submitting complete applications, to minimize permitting delays and ensure that company operations and projects are not hindered.
  • Develop and maintain rapport with regulators and government agencies to foster a working relationship that minimizes adversarial actions, enforcement actions and penalties.
  • Coordinate and manage environmental projects, including contractor and consultant activities.
  • Conduct regular inspections, in accordance with the RMGC Environmental Department procedures, of company operations to ensure regulatory compliance.
  • Monitor proposed environmental regulatory changes and with an eye to their effect on operations and demands on resources (personnel, financial).
  • Inform the Manager, Environmental Department, immediately of any compliance or permitting issues that may affect the company.
  • Ensure that departmental and company goals are achieved by participating in short and long-range planning activities.
  • As a member of the department, provide environmental awareness training to site employees.
  • Comply with all company policies and procedures including, but not limited to safety, environmental, confidentiality and code of conduct.
  • Meet or exceed the performance expectations established by management.
  • Punctuality and regular attendance required.
  • Perform other functions as assigned by supervisor.


Education and Experience

  • A Bachelor's degree in environmental engineering (preferred) or environmental science. A Bachelor's degree in a related engineering discipline (e.g., mining, metallurgical, or civil engineering) or scientific discipline (e.g., geology, chemistry, or hydrology, etc.) will be considered.
  • Three years' work experience in the mining industry preferred, or a new graduate with work/intern experience.

  • Strong technical and analytical skills.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills. Able to communicate effectively with all levels of employees and management, regulators and governmental agencies.
  • Able to describe environmental regulatory requirements to a diverse workforce.
  • Able to work as part of a team, in cooperation with other departments at RMGC.
  • Able to work independently to manage workload and prioritize tasks.
  • Strong organizational and administrative skills.
  • Experienced and skilled using the following software packages:
    • Microsoft Word
    • Microsoft Excel
    • Microsoft Access or other database software
  • Preference will be given to experience using the following:
    • "Monitor Pro" or other environmental database
    • Electronic records/obligations management system
    • AutoCAD
    • JDE or other software for procurement of goods & services
    • Map 3D or other GIS software
    • GoldSim
  • Must be at least 18 years old and authorized to work in the United States on a full-time basis.
  • Must have a valid driver's license.
