Fort Knox is an open-pit gold mine located near Fairbanks, Alaska in one of the largest gold producing areas of the state. It is mined by conventional open-pit methods, with ore processed at a mill and heap leach facility. Fort Knox has one of the few cold weather heap leach facilities in the world.

Job Description

Supervise and instruct a Mill Operations crew to perform in a cost effective, safe, productive manner while protecting the environment and enhancing morale of others.

Job Responsibilities

  • Oversee operations at the mill and related support systems.
  • Work with operators in all facets of process training, understanding, safety, and general work practices.
  • Prepare and conduct performance evaluations, recommend promotions, and carry out disciplinary actions as needed.
  • Investigate, analyze, and supervise the documentation of accidents, injuries, and equipment damage.
  • Monitor and maintain all production and personnel records (i.e. daily production and inventory logs, time cards, evaluations, etc.).
  • Generate work orders for repair or modification of operations equipment. In emergencies, off shifts, or as directed, perform or supervise completion of minor repairs.
  • Communicate with other department supervisors that support mill activities (i.e. maintenance, warehousing, crusher, mine etc.).
  • Monitor work areas on an ongoing basis to assure a safe and cost efficient operation.
  • Develop personnel by training and example.
  • Ability to react quickly and efficiently in emergency shutdowns and power failures.
  • Punctuality and regular attendance are required.
  • Compliance with all company policies and procedures including but not limited to safety, confidentiality and environmental policies.
  • Meet or exceed established performance expectations set by management.
  • Possession of a valid driver's license issued by the state.
  • Work without significant risk of harm to self and others.
  • Maintain accurate records and files.
  • Consistent exercise of discretion and judgment in job performance.
  • Responsible for conducting performance evaluations, recommending promotions and carrying out corrective actions as needed.
  • Investigate, analyze and supervise the documentation of accidents, injuries and equipment damage, and recommend prevention strategies as necessary.
  • Perform other related functions as assigned by Mill General Foreman.


Education and Experience

  • High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
  • Employee must have sufficient education to read and write instructions, perform simple mathematical calculations, and keep records.
  • Minimum of two years previous mill operations crew experience required.


Skills

  • Must be production orientated.
  • General knowledge of mining and the integration of the mining, milling, and maintenance functions.
  • Good working knowledge and skills with a P.C. utilizing word processing and spreadsheet programs.
  • Ability to work independently and also as member of the management team.
  • Strong verbal, written, analytical and persuasive skills and the ability to interact effectively with all levels of employees and management.
  • Ability to function within the qualifications outlined in the physical demands sheets.
