Bald Mountain is an open-pit mine with a large estimated mineral resource base located in White Pine County, Nevada. Its workforce comes from Ely, Eureka, Elko, and Spring Creek area. It is the newest mine in Kinross' portfolio aquired in January 2016. Nevada is one of the best mining jurisdictions in the world, along the southern extension of the prolific Carlin trend. The Bald Mountain Vantage Complex Project has commenced production, and the first gold bar was poured in June 2019.

Job Description

The successful incumbent will work as part of a team to provide complete environmental services for a gold mining operation and ancillary facilities. Under the direction of the Environmental Superintendent, will ensure that company activities are conducted in accordance with company requirements and in compliance with local, state and federal environmental regulations and licenses. Will conduct all activities in a safe manner and align performance and daily functions to reflect Kinross' values.

Job Responsibilities

  • Conduct all activities safely, in accordance with Kinross Bald Mountain safety rules and policies, to prevent harm to self and others
  • Ensure Kinross Bald Mountain compliance with requirements of environmental permits, licenses and regulations, focusing on monitoring, record-keeping and reporting requirements
  • Effectively communicate with site personnel regarding regulatory requirements and obligations
  • Complete permitting activities in a timely manner by soliciting and gathering necessary information from affected operational departments, and submitting complete application, to minimize permitting delays to ensure that company operations and projects are not hindered
  • Develop and maintain rapport with regulators and government agencies to foster a working relationship that minimizes adversarial actions, enforcement actions and penalties
  • Coordinate and manage environmental projects, including contractor and consultant activities
  • Conduct regular inspections, in accordance with the Kinross Bald Mountain Environmental Department procedures, of company operations to ensure regulatory compliance
  • Monitor proposed environmental regulatory changes and with an eye to their effect on operations and demands on the company
  • Ensure that departmental and company goals are achieved by participating in short and long-range planning activities
  • As a member of the department, provide environmental awareness training to site employees
  • Comply with all company policies and procedures including, but not limited to safety, environmental, confidentiality and code of conduct
  • Meet or exceed the performance expectations established by management
  • Punctuality and regular attendance required
  • Perform other functions as assigned by supervisor

Education and Experience

  • A Bachelors or Masters degree in environmental science or environmental engineering. A degree in a related scientific or engineering discipline will be considered (e.g., geology, chemistry, hydrology, or biological, civil or mining engineering)
  • A minimum of 3 years' work experience in environmental permitting or compliance
  • Two years' environmental experience at a metallic mining operation(s); familiar with mineral processing techniques, preferred
    • Preference may be given to working experience at an open pit gold mine(s)
  • A minimum of 1 year experience managing compliance with environmental regulatory or permit requirements, such as Air Pollution Control permits or Water Pollution Control permits
  • Preference will be given to experience managing facility-wide compliance with State of Nevada Permits
  • Strong technical, analytical, and organizational skills
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills. Able to communicate effectively with all levels of employees and management, regulators and governmental agencies
  • Able to effectively describe environmental regulatory requirements to a diverse work force
  • Able to work as part of a team, in cooperation with other departments at Kinross Bald Mountain
  • Able to work independently manage workload and prioritize tasks
  • Experienced and skilled using the following software packages:
    • Microsoft Word
    • Microsoft Excel
    • Microsoft Access or other database software
    • Environmental records/obligations management systems
    • JDE or other software for procurement of goods and services
  • Must have a valid driver's license
