Bald Mountain is an open-pit mine with a large estimated mineral resource base located in Nevada. It is the newest mine in Kinross' portfolio and was acquired in January 2016.

Job Description

Promote activities designed to maintain and to improve safety awareness throughout the mine property. Support implementation of policies and procedures under the Health and Safety Department programs. Assist in safety audits under the Kinross Gold Corporation Environmental and Health and Safety Management System.

Job Responsibilities

  • Assist in establishing goals and objectives regarding the development and implementation of programs
  • Actively develop, promote, and participate in company safety programs.
  • Assist in the development and implementation of emergency preparedness policy and procedure
  • Provide information to supervisors and employees regarding safe operating procedures
  • Participate in department audits and facilitate implementation of audit recommendations. Inspect work areas regularly in all departments and solicit ideas from employees regarding safety issues. Discuss areas of concern with employees and the supervisor of the areas concerned, and take immediate action on issues which could jeopardize personal safety or which could cause significant loss of capital resources
  • Exchange information between employees and appropriate outside agencies on a regular basis in order to be aware of and respond quickly to safety issues
  • Coordinate with department heads the communication of injuries and incident statistics to the appropriate outside agencies
  • Assist with the development of trend analysis from on-site database
  • Establish and maintain good relations with peers, supervisors, and employees to promote positive attitudes, safe work practices, and adherence to safe work standards. Lead by example, provide guidance, and motivate employees to work safely.
  • Keep skills and knowledge up-to-date: Technical, EMT, CAOHC, etc
  • Participate in departmental safety meeting and lead meetings when requested
  • Assist in developing and updating written standards and procedures for all major work activities
  • Ensure that the appropriate safety notices are posted in strategic locations
  • Assist in the development and administration of group and individual safety awards
  • Participate and assist supervisory personnel and / or follow-up on all accident / incident investigations, planned inspections, and reports as per company policy. Ensure that basic and root causes are determined and actions to prevent recurrence are completed. Also ensure that equipment damage and related incident costs are tracked
  • Participate or represent company during Federal and State interactions. Coordinate abatement of any citation and complete the proper reports
  • Available for weekend callout roster
  • Available to respond to medical facility or mine site in an emergency
  • Assist and fill-in for the Health and Safety Manager as needed
  • Maintain accurate records and files
  • Consistent exercise of discretion and judgment in job performance
  • Responsible for conducting performance evaluations, recommending promotions, and carrying out corrective actions as needed
  • Demonstrate professionalism and represent the company philosophy
  • Punctuality and regular attendance is required
  • Meet or exceed established performance expectations set by management
  • Compliance with all company policies and procedures including, but not limited to safety, confidentiality, and environmental policies
  • Work safely in all areas and identify potential safety hazards and work with management to correct them
  • Work without significant risk of harm to self and others


Education and Experience

  • High school diploma or equivalent required. Employee must have sufficient education to read and write instructions, perform simple mathematical calculations, and keep records.
  • Minimum of five years in mining required.
  • Three years in a Health & Safety position, preferred.
  • A minimum of three years of supervisory/leadership experience in an industrial setting preferred.
  • Completion of technical courses related to safety and security, documentation may be requested. CAOHC, EMT, RSO and other applicable certifications preferred.
  • Good working knowledge and skill with a P.C. utilizing word processing and spreadsheet programs.
  • Comprehensive knowledge and understanding of laws and standards relating to mining and the ability to work with regulatory agencies.
  • Must have solid verbal and written communication skills.
  • Must be a self-starter with the ability to work with others in a team environment.
  • Ability to function within the qualifications outlined in the attached physical demands sheets.
  • May work holidays, weekends, and shift work as required.
