The project has excellent potential to become a top-tier deposit that could support a large, long-life mine complex. Kinross' comprehensive exploration and development program will aim to support the vision of a quality, high-grade, open-pit mine and a longer-term, sizeable underground mine.

Job Description

You will be directly responsible and accountable for all activities conducted in the Safety Department while leading, promoting and developing health and safety functions in accordance with statutory requirements, Company values, standards, policies and procedures. The role will provide leadership to the team by promoting a zero-harm culture, sustainable development and for achieving overall objectives of the Kinross Great Bear site, including exploration, project(s) and operations.

Job Responsibilities

  • Support a proactive health and safety culture within the team, including employees and contrators.
  • Gradually implement Kinross safety systems at the Great Bear site, including rolling out behavioural safety practices, incident reporting and investigation, and various other best practices and best in class standards.
  • Ensure rapid and effective documentation and investigation of any incidents (including compliance with workers compensation reporting).
  • Monitor and recommend improvements to enhance the effectiveness of the HSE management system and requisite behaviors and practices.
  • Identify H&S risks and provide resolutions of emerging/escalating issues and H&S risks.
  • Co-design, communicate and implement an annual plan for improving H&S performance by proactively identifying and addressing areas of risk in order to develop a long-term strategy.
  • Work with key stakeholders and contract managers to ensure personnel comply with Company H&S standards.
  • Provide monthly and quarterly reports on H&S related activities, issues and performance against plans.
  • Conduct audits, meetings, training, and other activities designed to enhance H&S awareness as prescribed by Corporate policies and procedures.
  • As needed, hire and supervise safety, training, and occupational health staff.
  • Ensure compliance and continuous improvement of all safety and training policies, procedures and programs.


Education and Experience

College degree in a health & safety, or training & development program with 15 years' experience in a directly-related field, including 5 years in a supervisory role. CRSP designation, with Supervisory and Underground Common Core training are preferred.

  • Solid understanding of Occupational Health and Safety Act and mining regulations
  • Proficient decision-making and problem-solving skills
  • Extensive safety background
  • Able to comprehend and interpret technical language
  • Extensive knowledge and relevant work experience in underground mining
  • Very familiar with corporate safety rules and policies
  • Reasonably familiar with CSA Standards and related legislation
  • Solid understanding of budgets
  • Certified Mine Rescue First Responder
  • Valid First Aid and CRP Instructor certificate


Working Conditions

This position is located in Red Lake, ON. In this role, you will work a 5x2 schedule.
